I was in the Muskegon area in the fall of 2022, but this hotel was sold out. This time around, in July of 2023, the hotel was finally available. So, I had the chance to give it a try, and I was excited because it was the top rated hotel in the area. Unfortunately, after staying here for a night, I am stunned that the Shoreline Inn is the number one rated place in Muskegon. There were cleanliness concerns that I had, the facilities were lacking, but the night sleep was alright.
First, the cleanliness. In my opinion, this is where the Shoreline Inn falls short the most. There were stains on the carpet, and it looks like the carpet has not been changed for years. Also, the finishing on the sink and bathtub in the bathroom was either cracking or had mold. The ceiling tiles in the room also had mold, and overall, everything was extremely dusty, especially the air intake and vents. Feel free to see my attached pictures for specifics on what this looked like. On a brighter note, there were no bed bugs. My Rating for this Category: 2/5
Next, the facilities. The Shoreline Inn is a conference center, so there are some upgrades with that compared to a normal hotel. So, obviously, there is a conference center but also an onsite restaurant. However, it was closed during my stay. Additionally, there is an indoor pool, outdoor pool, and fitness center. The fitness center is extremely small. For facilities in the room, there was only one USB port in the entire room, and it did not even work. For it being 2023 as of this review, that is simply not acceptable. The toilet in our room had an extremely weak flush, and you have to press and hold the flusher for a long period of time for the toilet to actually flush. In general, all of the room facilities are extremely outdated. My Rating for this Category: 2/5
Finally, the night sleep. For my experience, the pillows in the room sank in quite a bit, so there was not a lot of head support. Also, the beds did have a pretty substantial creaking issue. Otherwise, the bed was comfortable, and I did get a half-way decent night of sleep. The room temperature did not have major issues getting down to the cooler temperature that I enjoy, so there was no overheating. My Rating for this Category: 3/5
Another thing that I want to mention is a potential lack of security and professionalism from the staff. When I was coming in from a day out in Muskegon, we noticed the security guard in the front breezeway standing outside, smoking, and cursing on the phone in front of guests coming back into the hotel. Clearly keeping the hotel secure was not on his mind, and that could pose a huge safety concern. I would not say this is professional at all.
Like I said before, I am stunned that the Shoreline Inn & Conference Center is the number one rated place in all of Muskegon. There are so many problems that add up, some more severe than others, which created a poor stay. There are cleanliness concerns, outdated and small facilities, and an alright night sleep. I cannot say that I would recommend the Shoreline Inn to people traveling through the Muskegon area with all that I...
ย ย ย Read moreThis hotel is absolutely not at the expected standards of a 3 stars hotel !.... it is completely outdated and needs a very urgent and total refurbishing.
Room : We booked a king room with a jacuzzi and it was seriously lacking equipment: we had only one night stand, and one very small and frele luggage rack. There was one tiny closet which was inside the bathroom behind the door which means you had to close the door to access the closet. The TV was a small screen and pixelizing most of the time, not too mention the lack of channel choice. There was a mini kitchen : sink, table, cupboards, fridge and microwave but just two paper cups and absolutely no plates or basic silverware, all cupboards were empty besides the coffee machine and a few pods. The state of the furniture and the equipment is not only old and old fashioned but most of all it is not in a good state.
For example the sink had multiple chip marks that were not new. There was no door threshold between the room and the bathroom which means the carpet was shredding. Furniture is outdated and worn out. And I could go on... I wonder how you can rent 200 + dollar a night room in such a dilapidated state !
General: The one positive point is the view .... but it's not an excuse for lacking on all the rest ! There is no room service (!!), but you can get some food from the bar. The menu is not available online or in the room... you have to go down at the front desk to check the paper document.....! Really ? Plus when I called to enquired the front desk overlooked to mention that the bar was closing within minutes, which means when I arrived... it was too late.
Staff : even though staff was courteous, they were doing only their basic duties and seemed unconcerned most of the time. I explained politely my concerns while checking in and also out and staff just nodded and explained the hotel is 20 years old... feels like you could add a decade to that... I found overall very poor customer service skills. Note to management: staff at the front desk needs to be trained: they don't know the layout of the rooms nor basic vocabulary for room equipment (luggage rack). Please train them, it will look better.
Noise : There is a restaurant downstairs by the marina, it closes quite early so noise was not an issue for the first night, but for the second night the music went on all night long ... even though the restaurant was closed. We did call the front desk and they said they would send security,... but the music went on until the morning. Maybe staff forgot to switch off the music while living the restaurant ?? The next day we mentioned it to staff in the restaurant and they didn't seem to care.
Overall, spent way too much money for the level of...
