Fort Trumbull State Park & Museum – A Must-Visit Gem in New London, CT

If you’re looking for a place in New London that offers beauty, history, peace, and purpose all in one, then Fort Trumbull State Park should be your first stop—especially in the summer.

This place isn’t just a park; it’s a full-on experience. The architecture alone tells a story. From the pre-war design to the thick granite walls, there’s a certain gravity to the fort that makes you pause and think about all the lives that passed through here. Even without stepping into the museum (more on that in a minute), you feel the history all around you. It’s living, breathing heritage built into the stone and wind.

Let’s talk scenery—everywhere you look is photo-worthy. The ocean backdrop, the classic fortress walls, and wide open spaces make it a perfect spot for photography, reflection, or even a quick solo escape from your daily grind. There are clean walking paths, grassy areas for lounging or play, and even designated barbecue spots if you want to bring your own food and have a cookout with friends or family.

Now, let’s keep it real—I’m still a little salty that I missed the museum by just 10 minutes. We got there too close to closing and didn’t have time to go inside, which was disappointing because I’ve heard it’s definitely worth the visit. But that just means I have to come back—and honestly, that’s fine with me.

Even without the museum, this spot is worth the trip. It’s peaceful, it’s open, and—bonus—it’s free to enjoy unless you choose to go inside the museum. If you’re on a lunch break and usually spend it sitting in your car? Do yourself a favor and spend 10 minutes driving over here. Park. Breathe. Eat. Recharge.

The restrooms were clean, the staff was kind and helpful, and the energy of the place just hits different. Whether you’re planning a family outing, a romantic stroll, a photo shoot, or just need some time to clear your mind, Fort Trumbull delivers.

Final Word: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It’s more than a park—it’s a peaceful, historical sanctuary by the sea. Bring lunch, bring someone you care about, and bring...

If you like forts, this is one to see. If not - well, you probably wouldn't be reading this. Or maybe you're just a glutton for punishment? If so, this is a fine, fine place to punish yourself. There's nothing else quite like it in the state. Massive stone fort that is a bit reminiscent of castle. You can go inside and climb up on the parapet and shake your fist as seagulls. Some other interesting buildings on site too, like the old barracks and officers quarters and the even older blockhouse. Plenty of free parking, clean bathrooms (in visitors center) and you can make a day of it. The visitor center has a great, informative museum too (again, only if you dig museums. And if not, see above) and there is even a small gift shop in the barracks. You do have to make sure you go in season and on the weekend though. The interior of the fort is not always open and neither are some of the other facilities, like the gift shop. That one isn't much of a loss though. Kind of weird, not much there, but some sort of rummage sale thing going on in the back. I don't get it. Stick...

If you are looking for a place to spend the afternoon have a picnic and you have children with an interest in military history come to Fort Trumbull. The museum located in a renovated historic building next to the fort contains artifacts, displays and video displays. The movies provide an excellent background on the history of the site and its role as a fort and research center. If you take the time it is possible to spend two hours in the museum. After completing the tour of the museum on three floors you can tour the grounds. The views are fantastic. There is a fishing pier and a dock for picking up the water taxi. Unfortunately the actual fort is closed to the public. Designed in the Egyptian style popular in the first half of the 19th century, look for the architectural motifs reminiscent of temples located along the Nile in ancient Egypt. Free parking and clean restrooms makes this visit stressless. Check times for when the...
