If you like forts, this is one to see. If not - well, you probably wouldn't be reading this. Or maybe you're just a glutton for punishment? If so, this is a fine, fine place to punish yourself. There's nothing else quite like it in the state. Massive stone fort that is a bit reminiscent of castle. You can go inside and climb up on the parapet and shake your fist as seagulls. Some other interesting buildings on site too, like the old barracks and officers quarters and the even older blockhouse. Plenty of free parking, clean bathrooms (in visitors center) and you can make a day of it. The visitor center has a great, informative museum too (again, only if you dig museums. And if not, see above) and there is even a small gift shop in the barracks. You do have to make sure you go in season and on the weekend though. The interior of the fort is not always open and neither are some of the other facilities, like the gift shop. That one isn't much of a loss though. If you are looking for a place to spend the afternoon have a picnic and you have children with an interest in military history come to Fort Trumbull. The museum located in a renovated historic building next to the fort contains artifacts, displays and video displays. The movies provide an excellent background on the history of the site and its role as a fort and research center. If you take the time it is possible to spend two hours in the museum. After completing the tour of the museum on three floors you can tour the grounds. The views are fantastic. There is a fishing pier and a dock for picking up the water taxi. Unfortunately the actual fort is closed to the public. Designed in the Egyptian style popular in the first half of the 19th century, look for the architectural motifs reminiscent of temples located along the Nile in ancient Egypt.
