Alice Austen was a remarkable figure - an early photojournalist who helped define the genre. She was also one of the first women on Staten Island to own a motorcar, carrying wrenches and other tools in her purse. The NYC park named after her is located in the Rosebank section of Staten Island and overlooks New York Harbor. It is a very scenic, postcard-ready pastoral setting - and it is free and open to the public. Alice's former home, "Clear Comfort", is located on the grounds of the park and is now a museum that contains her cameras. It is $5.00 to enter the museum which regularly hosts photographic exhibitions and a variety of events including: courses on shooting film cameras, making pinhole cameras, performances by local musicians including the Staten Island Philharmonic, and the annual "Pug Fun Day" where proud pug owners can show off their prize pooches. The park is well shaded, boasts a spectacular garden, and is an ideal place to relax, read a book, do yoga, photograph the harbor (including tug boats moored nearby) and generally recharge one's batteries. It is located at 2 Hylan Boulevard, the intersection of Hylan and Edgewater Street and adjoins Matthew Buono Park. I can't recommend it highly...

This house is from the 1840's and served as the New York Yacht Club for a time. It is fenced off and inaccessible but you can still get a glimpse of it. Unfortunately, several attempts to restore the New York City and national landmark have not been...

The park has plenty of places for a picnic with a beautiful view of the buono Beach and verazano Bridge. I There is a public restroom (portable), which I don't recommend. The...
