THIS PLACE IS COMMITTING FRAUD! My wife and I recently traveled to New York for a wedding. We rented a car from this Thrifty for 3 days. When picking up the vehicle, the woman at the counter asked where we were headed. We told her we were going to long Island. She explained that the reason she asked was to see if we needed to pre-purchase access to the EZ Pass for any tolls. She explained that if we don't pre-prurchase for something like 8$ a day plus the toll cost, then EACH toll would incur a 15$ administration fee on top of the toll. Since we were going to long island for the duration of our stay and there are no tolls from Queens to Long Island, we opted out.
When we returned the car, it would not scan for the man handling the returns. He told us we had to go inside to the counter. We took a pic of the millage and went in. We waited for about 10 min at the counter while the lady tried to check us out. She was very vague about what, if any problem there was. After waiting a little and worrying about missing our flight we asked if we could go or if she needed us to stay? We were told it was nothing...something to do with adjusting the time and that they would email the receipt.
When we got the receipt, to our surprise, there were 4 toll charges on it for a total $70 something. Apparently, after the rehearsal dinner, We went to sleep in our hotel room in Roslyn, One or both of us woke up and drove to NJ, then got on the NJ Turnpike somewhere south of exit Exit 16 around 5AM (Without incurring any tolls on the way mind you) , then got off at Exit 16E , then took the Lincoln Tunnel into the city, then somehow made it across the Throgs Neck Bridge next, Then took the Queens Midtown tunnel back into Manhattan and made it back to Roslyn without incurring anymore tolls, then parked the car in the same spot I left it in the night before, went back to sleep and wiped our memories of this event before waking up around 10:30 AM. I've done some crazy things after a rehearsal dinner before but this one tops them all. So anyway enough with the sarcasm. I'm sure by now you get it. I am disputing the charges with thrifty. So far they have refused to correct this obvious error. They're asking for bank records showing purchases elsewhere at the time of the tolls. This was between 5:16 AM and 8:35 AM. We were asleep at the time so no luck there.
I suggest you don't bu if you do rent from here DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Turn on your location history so you'll have a google timeline to prove you weren't on the NJ Turnpike at 5AM. Also take pictures of the mileage both at pickup and drop off. That was also recorded incorrectly. I took a pick of the mileage at drop off which was 34,850. They rounded it up to 35,000 in the receipt. I didn't note the mileage at pick up but that was wrong on the receipt also(I retraced all our steps). When we first got into it with them I was confident that the mileage alone would prove that the tolls were an error. I wasn't thinking they would add another 220+ miles to the odometer.
I've seen all the other reviews about hidden fees. Being duped is bad enough. This however is a step beyond some hidden language in the agreement. This is OUTRIGHT FRAUD. We were never in New Jersey or Manhattan or the Bronx. We went from Queens to Long Island and then back to Queens. That's it! I Never though I'd have to prove I wasn't on the turnpike at 5AM
Thrifty still has a chance to make things right but from the reviews I've read, and the customer service so far, I'm not too hopeful. If they do make it right I'll be sure to update this review. But just the fact that I have to spend hours of my time correcting errant billing has likely soured me on Thrifty for life. We will be renting...

Read moreBased on all of the negative reviews I was a bit nervous to rent a car with Dollar but I did anyway and my experience wasn't bad at all. The customer service staff was very friendly and accommodating. Pick up and drop off of my rental vehicle was smooth and easy. Upon pick up, my rental car had a few bird droppings on it but I simply asked the agent if someone could clean it off and they promptly took care of that issue (the car holding bay is relatively open and if you're from NY then you already know how disrespectful the NYC birds can be, I'm just sayin!). Anyhow, they have free shuttle service to and from the airport. The rental rate was great. I will definitely rent cars with Dollar again. And, no, I do not work for Dollar.
If you visit the Dollar website and READ their rental policy or call and speak directly with a Customer Service Rep then you won't have any surprises when you pick up your rental vehicle.
Yes you will need a valid driver's license and a credit card. You can use a debit card but additional information will be required to rent the vehicle. I don't know what it is but you can call them or check their website for that info.
Yes, they will place a hold on a certain dollar amount of funds but that hold will be released within a few days. From my experience, ALL rental car agencies does this so it's nothing new.
Yes, you should bring the car back with a full tank otherwise they will charge you for that (if you received the car with a full tank then you should bring it back with a full tank, it's only right).
Yes, they will ask if you require additional services like insurance, a GPS unit, an EZ Pass, etc and for the convenience of providing these services to you (if you agree to receive them) then these services will come with an additional fee. If you don't need it then you don't have to accept it and they will not charge for services that they do not provide.
So that's my experience and my advice. I totally recommend Dollar Rent A Car and will rent from them again in the future. Hopefully your experience will be as...
