Ecotone has provided amazing services and opportunities for the Red Hook community as well as all throughout NYC.
Being a part of the summer and fall training program has been amazing. The intention behind each Saturday session is set with professionalism and integrity, embodying qualities that help us build character while learning carpentry and ways to improve the community. Being able to incorporate safety and responsibility each Saturday with stretching and a few yoga poses before putting our protective gear on and going into the carpentry lesson for the day definitely sets you up for success as it prepares your body mentally and physically all while practicing accountability for your workspace.
The environment is encouraging and the team is always ready to uplift you and help when needed. I’m grateful that coming out of this program I’ve not only harnessed the confidence to use tools but I’ve also made my own. This carpentry training experience is tough and full of hard work all throughout the 10 straight weeks but by the end of it, it truly leaves you feeling so fulfilled...
Read moreI found Ecotone in the summer of 2021 when I was scouring NYC for natural building companies and workshops. My heart and hands were pining to connect more with natural materials and expand my technical skills beyond the virtual world of architectural design. I was fortunate enough to participate in Ecotone's Arc 40 apprenticeship summer program and contribute my skills to help co-create informational handouts and a course syllabus. The values at Ecotone resonated deeply with me: community, knowledge exchange, natural materials, craftsmanship, traditional building techniques. I felt empowered by the knowledge and hands-on experience Craig provided throughout the course and how supportive an environment he created. I couldn't believe such a place existed in NYC! Craig Desmond is a talented craftsman, community builder, wellness developer, and much more. I now have the pleasure to work with him and his team thanks to the apprenticeship summer program experience....

Our members and staff learned and heard about the intricacies of coordinating multiple development stakeholders with a deep understanding of natural building materials and an unshakeable commitment to creating environments that foster meaningful human interaction. Our members on the trip were particularly interested in future careers in design and construction so Craig's insightfulness and wonderful hospitality (and sharing many laughs with the boys) truly created an unforgettable experience for our boys. Thank you...
