Food World Supermarket — Attraction in New York

Food World exists because of the location in Canarsie where there is no other supermarket within walking distance. Fruits are usually not fresh. The vegetables fair slightly better. The meat and poultry look sick. Many customers bypass the meats deparrtment. Often times prices are wrong. For example beef chuck steak would have a sign in that section listing $2.99/pound. Yet none of the packaged steaks are at that price. Instead it is proced at $4.29/pound and no sales meat is in sight. On numerous occassions the prices at the register do not match the advertised sales price so I have had to request a refund after reviewing my receipt. Prices for crackrrs and juices are routinely higher than competitor's unless it is on sale. You rarely see any one shopping with a cartful of groceries because they shop for staple items and like myself must go to another venue for fresh vegetables, fruits and meats. Staff there are very friendly. But qualify is lacking. They do have a delivery service if you purchase...

They need help understanding what is covered by WIC. A mother walked out unable to get her daughter strawberries because supposedly they are organic and not covered under WIC. I called the head of HRA and they confirmed that any fruit or vegetable even "organic" is covered. After i confronted them about it they said they hadnt had the chance to put it in the system because its a weekend and their boss wasnt there. Obviously they lied about the organic part since then they changed their statement saying they havnt had a chance to put it in the system. If they can't understand the importance of WIC to some people and don't understand what is covered and not responsible, they shouldn't have the right to have the system at all! Waste of my shopping...

Food World has changed owners over a dozen times within the 15 plus yrs I've lived in Canarsie. It's basically the same with minimal upgrades in departments but the produce is always fresh and I've never has issues with any items purchased. They do have a diverse selection of cultural items which comes in handy since the neighborhood is diverse as well. They also offer home delivery with purchases over $20-$30. There is ample parking available within the mini mall which also house a few other stores. Deli, 99cents store, Laundry mat, MetroPCS, Daycare & Cab...
