Terrific atmosphere. Big pool in a park. I go for the evening lap swims when people are there to work out and get some mileage in. There's several policy changes I'd like to see put into place though. This is a great location and I think it's way past the time when NYC should recognize that the world we live in now is HOT! And it gets hot earlier and stays hot longer. This pool should open like most suburban pools do--on Memorial Day! And since September can be spectacularly hot I believe the pool should stay open until October first. I'm sure there would still be plenty of patrons heading for the water in late May and late September. ALSO, very important here. It's time to put some money into these locker rooms and showers. They're falling apart. The Central Park Conservancy has done a wonderful job of restoring lawns and benches and bridges and the Boathouse. I believe Trump got involved with the construction of the Wollman Rink. What would be a wonderful thing for the poor sister uptown pool/rink would be for some thought, time and money put into re-constructing this wonderful pool. The place has a run down feel to it and without spending a whole lot of public money I believe we could have a first class public pool in a place that...
Read moreLooking for a more affordable place to take my 6,12, 13 & 15 year old daughters I was happy to discover this rink which is all the way up at the northern tip of central park. My first choice had been Bryant Park which is stunningly beautiful this time of year but at $33 a person for skates (they don't charge admission so if you have your own skates it's free but we don't) I just couldn't afford it. This rink although certainly not as nice as Bryant Park was just right for an hour or two of fun for all of us. Pros: half the price of Bryant Park (if you don't own skates) not overly crowded, no wait for tickets, locker or skates, rink is spacious lengthwise (but not as wide as Bryant Park), staff relatively friendly, easy parking along 110th street and short scenic walk down to the rink which is easy to find since you can see it from 110th street. Cons: locker rooms are very old circa 1970's (those interlocking black rubber floors are particularly nostalgic) restrooms are in bad shape and smell horrible (but hey when you gotta go . . .), there are no dining areas and seating in general is limited. Overall I say save the money...
Read moreThis is the pool my family has gone to since the 80's and so much has changed for the better as far as security and procedures. If you from the 80's I'm sure you can remember a evening or two where you went to night pool...not that it was open but we were still there. This shows how much security has changed and no holes in the fences lol. The place needs a facelift since the lockers and concession area has not changed since I was a kid. Good news is that they approved a total renovation of the place, not sure when it'll be complete but looking forward to it. In the winter its cool to ice skate if you can't make it to 59th street but I'm not a big fan of the cold so I may go once or twice if my kids are lucky ;0)..I hope that with the new renovations come new rental skates, a concession stand that is open and more sitting areas inside. I also hope they get a little creative with the toddler area. I recommend morning session which starts at about 11 if I'm not mistaken. They provide free lunch for kids..nothing fancy, sandwich, fruit or...
