My family and I have donated items such as toys, clothes, books, furniture, and more to this MyUnique location ever since I was a little girl.
Now I am a college student abroad and I brought some college friends back with me to New York. My friends love to shop and we saved up a good chunk so we can go thrifting. This thrift store has been such a big part of my life growing up that I decided to take my friends here first.
Everything started out fine and normal until my friend tried to purchase a black northface puffer jacket. Two of the workers mumbled as she was trying to purchase it and then they took it away from her. We tried to ask them why they would take it away until one of the workers, a woman, aggressively told us to get out of the store and that we were attempting to steal. Not a single one of my friends or I were attempting to steal so we were beyond confused. I asked if we could see the footage of us trying to steal and she continuously denied us. She kept threatening to call the police on us and I was so scared, but I reminded myself that I had nothing to be afraid of as I hadn’t done anything wrong. I did what any kid should do when they need help: decided called my mom. My mom came to the store as quick as she could and asked for the situation to be explained to her. The worker yet again repeated that we tried to steal, my mom didn’t like the attitude from this employee so she asked to speak to the manager. At first the worker DENIED to let her speak to the manager and then finally she agreed after some convincing when my mom said she would call the cops because what they were doing, profiling us, was in fact ILLEGAL. The worker took us to her manager who honestly appeared just as clueless as we were as she explained the situation. The worker also decided to LIE and say that my mom threatened to call her friends to beat her up. My mom is a respectful individual with a respectful career, why in Gods name would she call friends to beat her up. That comment had me, my mom, and my friends all in awe. My mother asked if we could see footage of us ‘stealing,’ the manager said that they couldn’t show us any footage and my mother said that it was fine and that she understood. My mom then asked my friend if she still wanted the northface jacket and my friend said yes. The manager allowed her to purchase the jacket. When we got back home, I told my friends that that was definitely not what I wanted our NYC trip to consist of but that’s as New York as it’ll get. All I feel now is disappointment and embarrassment. Something I cherished growing up getting turned into an establishment I will never step foot in again.
Unfortunately, I do not have the names of the employees involved because when I asked them for their names, they refused to give them. All I have to say to them if they read this is the following: I hope you don’t make it a habit to treat teens like that everyday, especially, Black and Brown teens. We are college students. We understand that it is a scary world and stores get robbed everyday across the US, but instead of jumping to conclusions with no evidence (which is ILLEGAL), let’s try to figure out what is the issue and compromise and work with one another. To that one worker, Im not sure if you are a mother, but if you are, would you stand by and let your children be talked to and be treated the way...
Read moreI visited this store because a friend of mine at work with told me about the quality of clothes and items at this specific store. But I am not going to review the clothes or items they sell. I am going to review the workers and the terrible customer service they offered. It was mt first time visiting this store located in the Bronx 234th st. At first I noticed the store and walk inside after looking I stopped to ask one worker with anyrllow shirt if the price on the clothes was the right price. Looked and answer something totally different from what I asked. Worker( one Thursday we have a sell and you need to be a member to get coypons.) I looked at my husband and looked back at the youngman and asked him once more. Is this the price? He said yes. I continued walking and was amazed of how well the store is organized. I was looking for a dress large in size. The isle werent specific and didn't havema sign that saidnthe dress size. I asked another worker by the way, they lookednas if they are from Cambodian or Egyptian. He told me the dresses are here, did you go to school, do you know hiw to read? My husband hold my hand and I breathe hard, wow. So I told him yes I am a teacher of children with special needs. I have a Master Degree and I am a librarian. Did you go to school? He said yes and I want to be a teacher. I walked away and tried to find the shoes my size. After collecting every item I walked to the register and I noticed something that look as a self checkout machine so I asked a lady if they were walking and she said yes come. As I am checking the items I scan an item that has two tickets with barcode so I asked her.if that was the price because I wasnt sure that I scanned the right tag. She called a young skinny lady also from Egypt that treated me with so much disrespect on her words. Mami, mami that is not the price, she is trying to help you. I stopped her and said Mrs. Dont call me mami please, yoy can call me Ms or Ma'am. She looked at me and said mami everything is right. Then I asked her if there was some kind of membership so I can br part of it because I did like the store products. She said you need to download the myunique app and then you can get coupons. I asked her can you help me download it because I was going to but almost 300 dollars of items from the store and she said no. Honestly I purchased everything but will never go back to that specific store. The workers there at least the ones from Cambodian and Egypt have the worst customer service. Are not educated and discriminated me because I am hispanic by calling me mami several time and disrespecting me with their ignorant comments. I am so dissatisfied with that specific store. First visit and last, my money is wort more than those...
Read moreWhy did I give Unique 4 ⭐️s instead of 5... Because to start there is not much we should complain about as customers we just need to be smart when we go and shop there. On a day with 50% off I paid $31.19 for 7 items. These include 2 skirts, 2 pair of shoes (heels to be more specific), a belt, a dress shirt for my husband and a New name brand tie with ticket and everything. To be honest This was my first time and I was very happy!! But I eill say this I don’t feel like I will go to Unique on a regular day. The 50% off makes a huge difference. The prices on some of the merchandise were pricey for a regular day without discounts. So I think it is soooo worth going... one must be pacient and choose the right days to go. Download the app also to get the alerts on the days they have the discounts. One thing about Unique... the use of the fitting rooms.... you can come with a whole cart 🛒 filled with your clothes and you will not be allowed to try them all at once. You need to leave your cart outside and choose 3 items to try on. After that you need to get back on the line to try on another 3. That may only be good on a slow day, but on those discount days when it is crowded the line may be too long to do this over and over again.
The clothes are not organized by size.... they are by category dresses/ pants/ skirts and so on but your need to look through all in order to find your size. The shoes in the other hand are organized by sizing... you find those on top of the rack of clothes.
I would of given Unique 5 stars if i thought it could be affordable on a regular day but $19.99 for a dress shirt? Hmm.... I can find it for $14 and new else where. But i paid $10 on a 50% discount day. Which makes it all better. Many dresses were over $20.... I mean used clothes shouldn’t be priced that high.
No doubt I will continue going here... because i was so happy with my purchase... i found treasures within the many things in there.
Choose to go on 50% off days!!!! Than you will be...
