KBSC is the newest in the lineage of restaurants by the guys that created the Bronx Alehouse, the Forest Hills Station House, George Keeley's, the Dead Poet, etc. This place lives up to the standards that preceded them.
Although this place is billed simply as a place for Pizza and Beer, this merely serves to concentrate their focus on quality. They have a smaller menu than your average red-sauce pizza jernt, and a smaller beer / wine / liquor menu than your nearby alehouse, but anything that appears to be lacking in quantity more than makes up in quality.
The Pizza is made to order in a wood-fired pizza oven. The quality of the pizza is on par with your other upscale pizza places like Lombardi's or Frank Pepe's. If you love Broadway Joe's (like I do) but you think NY-Style pizza is the only way then you'll be disappointed. If you appreciate the thought that goes into the perfect combinations of ingredients on a made-to-order pizza then you'll be very happy. My happiest moment was ordering a fresh clam pie that was arguably as good (better IMO) as Frank Pepe's. The Funghi (mushroom) pizza was just awesome. They have plenty of non-pizza items on their upscale "pub-grub" menu such as "Wood-Fired" wings saturated in sauteed onions and giardiniera. To match the food they have a great balanced selection of beers from ipa's to high octane stouts / iipa's, as well as a fantastic table wine from Pumphouse wines.
They made a great use of the space with a spacious bar and plenty of tables. As usual the owners put as much of an emphasis on the great staff as they do on their great food and drinks. Yet again these guys have raised the bar for what's considered a great restaurant in the Kingsbridge /...
Read moreI want to give 1 star for myself, but I can’t for two reasons: 1) My companion didn’t have the same unpleasant experience. She said of her Shroom garlic pizza, “I really liked it.” She also ordered the Brussels sprouts, which she found satisfactory but felt they were “slightly burnt” (they were also overcooked on her last visit) and taste-wise were “missing a little something.” 2) This is my companion’s go to neighborhood spot & I did have an enjoyable experience the first time I came (during the day). But this second visit, which will be my last, perturbed me for a few reasons—enough to want to rate 1 star: A) We entered and no one seated us, so we sat ourselves. While looking at menu, the waiter asked us if we would move to a 2-seat table for a party of 4 that came in. This really annoyed me. My facial expression, body language, and non-verbal reply should’ve clearly told waiter it wasn’t “ok”; if not for my companion, I would’ve got up and left. B) We’re moved to the worst table—the bar & heavy foot traffic on one side and a party of 4 on other side. People walking by were literally walking over our food!!! as the pizza is elevated on a table stand. This is the part that really pet peeved me. C) And this is a big part of why I won’t be coming back (although I’m sure my companion will): NO CALAMARI. This was my only reason for even coming. Once the server said they don’t carry calamari anymore, there was no reason for me to even be there anymore. I winded up not ordering anything for myself and just watching my companion eat, while protecting the food on table from people walking by...
Read moreHaving been raised in a New York City where pizza was almost always made by Italians back in the 70's,I think I have an idea of how great pizza should taste. That being said, I never spent upwards of ten bucks on a personal pizza. This place changed the game for me. The cuisine here is prepared with the very best ingredients, from the gourmet fried macaroni and cheese in the in the gourmet appetizer section{which was simply delicious), to the selection of pizzas, which currently number eleven. With 20 toppings to choose from, you won't soon forget the sensation of your taste buds exploding in your mouth. They also feature salads and sandwiches, and, of course, several pasta dishes. But this is a special pizza place. That's where you want to go.The service is very good, and the manager, Dave, is both gracious and accommodating for whatever your palate desires. They serve a small, but nice selection of craft beers, and a fine selection of wines and Italian inspired cocktails. Say hello to Dave, and prepare to have your taste...
