The first night of our stay when checking in, the woman at the front desk got into an argument with me. Her tone was very hostile and she was making me very uncomfortable. I was annoyed because my 4 year old didn't have a roll-out bed to sleep on. She said it was never requested when the reservation was made, but the room stated it slept 5, so why would I need to request that? Regardless, there was miscommunication and she wasn't empathic to my situation at all. We had to run out and buy an air mattress for my toddler to sleep on for the week we were staying there. Her and another woman at the front desk were speaking down to my mother-in-law after she expressed her concern of MOLD in all of the showers. I didn't like how they were speaking to her and that's when me and the one woman got into an argument when I called her out on her unprofessionalism. I've never felt so uncomfortable to stay in a hotel after this experience. I later found out the woman I got into an argument with was not even a front desk position, she was part of the cleaning service (actually I think she was HEAD of cleaning service) and helping out the front desk since they were short staffed. I truly believe she blacklisted my sister-in-law and I from getting our rooms cleaned. I had no paper towels, one used toilet paper roll, no hand soap to shower with, no garbage bags, no fresh towels or sheets. I had to ask for all of these things since my room was never cleaned. We ended up purchasing these things since I stayed at this lodge for 7 nights. I even ran into someone from cleaning in the hallway, and asked her to clean the rooms on the 4th night. She said she was sorry and would definitely come later that day. I came back to the lodge that night and it was still not cleaned. It wasn't until the last night I was staying that I received a knock on my door for cleaning service , after my mother-in-law requested it via phone, and I said "no" because we were leaving the next morning, so what was the point? I forgot to mention that my sister in law's room was not ready on top of all of this (we checked in the same time) when all of the rooms were reserved months ago. We drove here from Florida with little children, so there is no excuse to why we were experiencing all of these issues after long hours of driving when we made these arrangements well in advance. The breakfast -- there was never enough food for my kids, like a feast or famine. This experience was HORRIBLE. As a customer, no one should be treated this way. Even if I "yelled at her" which I did not (she was very overwhelmed and lashing out on the customers before us as well), that is no way to treat someone paying and staying at your place of...
Read moreOur Girl Scout Troop stayed here back in April. When we made the initial reservation, we immediately requested conjoining rooms or rooms right next to each other, explaining in great detail to the staff the strict guidelines we are given by Girl Scouts for a trip. We were repeatedly ensured that this should not be a problem, down to us calling at 2:50 pm the day of stressing the importance of conjoining rooms or rooms right next to each other.
We spent the day exploring the city, the reason why our Girl Scout troop was in New York, and arrived at the hotel to check in, only to find that they were offering us rooms on SEPARATE floors! There was immediate panic, again, due to the strict guidelines that we STRESSED to the staff we must follow. They then tell us the most they could offer us were rooms on clear down the halls from each other. I do not understand the point of reservations when you cannot reserve what is needed in special circumstances.
The rooms were lackluster, during the first night's stay one of the rooms was the ADA room. The shower got water EVERYWHERE and made everyone uncomfortable so we had all girls, one at a time, take showers in the other room. The heater did not work properly and made a terrible grinding noise and a pretty bad smell when turned on.
Breakfast is your basic breakfast. You will definitely have to get early if you want any of the good cereal or orange juice. They run out of that quickly but have an abundance of pastries and muffins.
Transportation to and from the hotel to the city and back are very easy to navigate and does not take long.
This place was convenient in price for my girls, but you get what...
Read moreEXCELLANT! The best part of Navy Lodge NY is the staff. EVERY single staff member had a smile and a friendly word at all times. Always helpful and attentive to your needs. In addition, the rooms were very modern and clean, and the interior of the building was well kept. While there is a beach a short walk from the lodge, there are really no other amenities. But, what else do you need? You are in NEW YORK! Enough said! Light breakfast is served in lobby each morning, but I would suggest the Coast Guard Galley around the corner for complete balanced meals and reasonable cost.
Getting around. While we found driving on Staten Island no problem, I would suggest public transportation for the rest of the city. An unlimited 7 day pass was about $30 and can be used for all NYC Metro Buses and trains. Buses stop on Lilly pond Ave. right outside the gate. They are frequent and run at all hours. Take one to The Staten Island ferry, which is free and makes access to Manhattan a quick and easy trip and is a wonderful sightseeing opportunity. OR, ride the S53 Bus across the Verrazano Bridge and connect direct with the subway at 86th street in Brooklyn. From there you can get anywhere in the city.
I look forward to...
