My recent experience at The Academy NYC, A Paul Mitchell hair salon Staten Island was a NIGHTMARE. I have tried this place many years ago and I was always satisfied but I had the absolute worst experience when I went to this place yesterday. I understand majority are students along with the teacher guiding them through. when I walking I was welcome with smile a for my 5:15 pm appointment. I asked Marie the teacher for a hair cut, balayage and to color my roots. She said to me it would be no problem and she brought one of her students to do my hair. The student was very polite and respectful but very slow she took 5 hours JUST to foil all my hair. The sad part was that the teacher Marie was not there to watch her and guide her she offer her help ONCE and she walked away. Then at the end Marie came back to help she pulled my hair bangs to paint but she did it so carelessly that it hurt my head. I have had done balayage before and I have never seen somebody doing it the way they did. Every piece of my hair they took it was different size and i started to panic when the student called her teacher Marie to tell her that my hair is turning orange!! Marie the teacher said âdonât worry looks beautifulâ but I felt something was not right. 3 hours passed and the lady was STILL bleaching my hair and then another 2 hours passed continuing this. By the time I knew it, it was 9:30 pm and at that time she started washing my hair. The student asked me if I still wanted a haircut and a blow dry, I looked at her and I said yes I am not going home like that. She was ready to let me go home in SOAKING WET HAIR because they were close to closing and she wanted to go home. They had everything ready to go and the music and lights turning off like they wanted to kick me out right then and there. The teacher Marie came over and said to me sorry but we canât blow dry you hair itâs late so I said to her excuse me I canât go home like that. She pretty much didnât care! How sad is that. She has the title of a teacher and in my opinion SHE needs go back to school and learn to be a good teacher. The point of teaching is to help make the costumer happy but she was just in a hurry to go home. They had the audacity to charge me $132 what a joke, I was ready to cry after complaining how much i hated it and the fact that I did it before going away on vacation. They ended up charging me $84 but I regret paying. Thatâs much this kind of job cost $0. They wasted my time and left me with the worst hair you could imagine. What a mistake I shouldâve kept my hairstyle because she absolutely ruined my hair. I wouldnât take the chance coming to this place again very sad they way they teach this student, and I am very disappointed. :( After my review of my nightmare experience with Paul Mitchell academy I decided to call the school to share my experience, I spoke to Diana, one of the teachers, she apologized for what happened with me. She asked me to please come back and that she would personally be there when arrived. I meet two of the teachers, Diana and Danielle very nice ladies and it was completely different from what I experienced going at night but in a much better way. They apologized the student Jessica took care of the whole process while Diana and Daniel guided her, and she follows every detail. I was very happy with her job and it looked much better. Before I left Diana asked me to come back for a complimentary hair treatment a week later, went back Diana show Jessica exactly what to do. Jessica did a beautiful job. I think having open communication with students is very important and thatâs exactly what I saw. If I have to go back, I will definitely go back during the early class because I just feel more comfortable but thatâs just me. Thank you, Diana and Danielle, for take care my problem and thank you, Jessica I wish you good luck and keep up...
Read moreI am an adult, 3 months into cosmetology school. I was in another career for 13 years, and had one opportunity to get my license, and proceed in a career of the arts vrs the rest of my professional life behind a desk (although I loved my job and my company, I always felt like I was in the wrong industry) and so I took a leap of faith. I visited 5 school here on the island and in Manhattan, before making my final decision to enroll in Paul Mitchell. I was given the tour by the owner herself, which was a huge influence on my decision. She is active and accessible within the building, and practices a perfect balance of professionalism and humanity. Although speaking from my experience alone, I have never needed her guidance directly because the teachers are incredible and run the school as if it were their own. What I have experienced as a 39 year old student is this; school has the ability to mold you into licensed professional cosmetologist, if you let them. This starts with simple things like following the dress code, being on time, being prepared, handing work in on time. They are hard on you (also reasonably patient) because they want you to walk out not only as a graduate into the industry prepared, but as a top choice hire, carrying their name. This is not the school for the kid whoâs just looking for something to mark them present on an attendance sheet. They expect hard work, dedication, professionalism, self motivation, and a true curiosity in the art of cosmetology. Itâs also a lot of fun! (Honestly this place is like a vacation compared to my 40-60 hour work week, getting to do and learn about what I love all day long!) I feel I am getting the best opportunity and Iâm confident about my choice to enroll. That being said, I do see some of the kids struggling with one another, from my point of view itâs the students NOT the school. Some create groups of restrictive friendships, others seem to welcome conflict rather then ignore it. Many spend more time worrying about what everyone else is doing, rather then using that energy to better themselves. You have to remember what you are here for and stay focused, your time enrolled is limited, there is something new to learn every single day as long as you are willing to learn. The teachers and staff do everything they can to accommodate struggling students and make there enrollment a successful one but unfortunately the real world is not going to be as accommodating. It is up to the student to apply themselves, the teachers and staff give you all the tools and opportunities you need to succeed, they guide you and try to fill your day with not only new experiences, but repetitive study so that when u leave you are confident and knowledgeable. So far every graduate who has dropped in to say hi, or network is actively working in the industry, and more important are happy with their career choices and...
Read moreI was a cosmetology students at pmtsnyc and I would never recommend it to anyone looking to go to cosmetology school. the lack of consistency and favoritism between students is unbelievable. one day the teachers are complimenting your outfit and the next youâre getting written up for that exact outfit being out of dress code. I understand a dress code but depending on the week and the teachers moods an outfit entirely in dress code suddenly warrants a write up. all the school cares about is money and they do not keep that a secret. diana especially promotes phase two like none other when in reality itâs just a money pull because as a student in phase two your services cost more money making the school more money. clients will book an appointment and then if they end up with a phase two student unknowingly they will have to pay the extra cost even though they didnât ask for a phase two student. youâre given one locker but what they donât tell you is your only options for lockers are lockers that do not fit your heavy and bulky kit that is extremely inconvenient to carry in and out of school daily. the kit is on wheels but will likely break from over usage. all your tools that you were given and you buy with your money to add to your kit will also at some point be stolen no matter how careful you are. the teachers have no idea what theyâre doing in terms of teaching and doing hair. on multiple occasions students got services done by the teachers and have been absolutely botched and the one teacher that knows what sheâs doing had to fix it. all you can think daily is wow these are the people iâm supposed to be learning from. good luck on the state board because every teacher will show you how to do it differently and then when you do your own research you find out they were all possibly doing it wrong. constantly you will get yelled out for being loud next to the offices. the offices have glass doors and are directly next to where the students are that echos. arguably talking is part of our job and even though no one is yelling and everyone is talking at a considerable level you will get yelled at day after day. along those lines we have been told we are not allowed to talk to each other because we have to focus on our âclientâ and do a consultation with her. our client being a plastic mannequin that believe it or not cannot speak to us. so no I would not recommend this school to anyone looking to go for...
