Did you know that the beautiful Swedish cottage is the home of one of the finest puppeteer troupes in the United States? Yes, it is! Since 1947 it is the home of the home of the Marionette Theater. It is purely authentic, too! It was crafted in Sweden (thus the Swedish flag along with that of the United States), and was shipped into the US in 1876 for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. It arrived in Central Park in 1877 at the request of Central Park co-designer Frederick Law Olmsted. Since then it has been used for multiple needs - a tool house, a library, an entomological laboratory, even a headquarters for the Civil Defense during World War II. In 1947, the Swedish Cottage became known, as it is today, as the home of the Marionette Theater. In a show of patriotism, both Swedish and American flags fly from the roof of what was once a traditional schoolhouse. In addition to hosting marionette performances, which are often attended by classes throughout the school year, the Cottage is also available for children's birthday parties. The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre Anywhere is showing past performances of puppet shows online. Visit their website for...

You can find the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre Just off 79th Street, near the Belvedere Castle. This 19th century cottage house was built in Sweden in 1875, shown in the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition the following year before being bought and moved to NYC's Central Park in 1877.

The cottage is one of many interesting things to discover in Central Park. During its time here, it has served a variety of functions. However, since 1947, it has hosted marionette theatre performances, providing another family friendly form of leisure and entertainment. You can see the marionette performance schedule online at the cityparksfoundation website if interested.

Even if you are not particularly interested in the performances, the cottage is still interesting to see if you end up spending time in this area of the park.. The cottage is a example of Swedish 19th century architecture and is of very nice craftsmanship. If you've not seen building types like this before, its well worth a quick look-see before making your way to other attractions in...
