Very interesting museum. It has information and real artifacts from the polio era. Hickory had its own polio hospital that started out as tents and the community built it into a hospital. Hickory was one of the places with the lowest death rates during the polio epidemic. Upstairs is the original courthouse built in 1924. There are two jury boxes. One on the east side and one on the west side of the room. This allowed the jurors to change sides, depending on the sun so they wouldn’t get to warm!!! It has a 1930 race car, an original British coat from the Revolutionary War, and a doctors office and instruments from the early 1900’s. I learned a great deal and enjoyed the whole museum!. I had a special needs adult with me and he was so interested in many of the artifacts and was reading the information on the items. The information was displayed in a format easy to read and not overwhelming. During our exploration trip accross Catawba County (approx. 50 mi NW from our base in Charlotte) we decided to check out the area's History Museum. A sweet lady, Jessica, welcomed us and gave us some instructios on how to get the most out of our self-guided tour of the museum that artfully displays its exhibits in the setting of Catawba County's 1924 Courthouse in downtown Newton.
