The main issue with this property was the lack of security and dismissal of my safety concerns when I brought them to the hotel’s attention.
My first impression of this hotel was not a good one. When I parked my car, I got out and looked down to see a pair of women’s underwear in the front lawn area. They were partially covered by mulch and had been rained on, and it was clear they had been there awhile. This was something anyone could have spotted; it was obvious no one was keeping an eye on that area (literally the front near the lobby).
I was assigned a room at the back of the hotel, where I would park at a side door that could be opened with my room key. Right away, I noticed that the lock box was broken off the wall and the exterior door was unlocked. I went inside and saw that the only way up to my room was via a dimly lit stairwell right by this open door. The hotel itself backs up to railroad tracks and is located alongside a fairly busy road in an area that looked a bit deserted/rundown, so the lack of properly secured doors should have been a major concern. (I should also note that when I looked into the stairwell, the heater unit cover was hanging off the wall. These two broken items in the first two minutes of my stay, along with underwear sitting on the front lawn, gave me the impression that the hotel was not being kept up.) So, I went to the lobby to see about an alternative room or (hopefully) a different location that might be safer. At the front desk, another family who had just checked in came up to report the same safety concerns and also to report that the alarm in the room next to the one they’d been given was going off with no one responding to it. The front desk attendant did not seem to take the safety concern seriously at all. He just said that he would call maintenance and have them look at it. This was not fixed before I checked out.
I was given a different room that could be accessed via the main lobby and was on the second floor. The room itself was quite nice; a sitting room with a pull-out sofa and a bedroom with two queen beds. There was a microwave and mini refrigerator as well. The room and bathroom were clean, although the toiletries in the bathroom were not full. Not a big deal at all; just something for the hotel to be aware of if they read the reviews. New, sealed toiletries should be provided for each guest.
However, in checking the room over, I realized my windows did not lock. I was on the second floor, so this was not an immediate safety concern, but I do wonder whether their first-floor windows are the same. If so, that needs to be addressed.
The indoor pool was very nice; warm water and plenty of chairs. They did not stock more than 2-3 towels while I was there and there were no towels at all the second day. Also, other guests had left behind several pairs of swim goggles and pool toys and they were not moved or cleaned up at all during my stay. It looked as though they don’t check in on the pool very often, or those minor issues would have been taken care of.
I ate at the restaurant twice and both times, the food was good and service was pleasant. The included breakfast was very good; our waitress was pleasant, attentive, and kept bringing fresh portions of hot foods to refill the various stations. The selection was actually impressive.
Overall, the hotel itself was decent, but the lack of maintenance showed general disregard for guest comfort and the security concerns would prevent me from being comfortable enough to stay there again.
