Memorial Park is part of a system of parks literally strung through the heart of Nutley, with the Third River at the heart of all the parks.
The parks were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and his firm, who designed Central Park in NYC and Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ. Needless to say, the parks are beautiful. But the parks are also very functional, accessible, have a variety of terrain, and have a number of playgrounds spread throughout.
Essex County, which oversees one portion of the park, recently upgraded the playground and made some other improvements.
A portion of the park, owned by the Township of Nutley, added new lighting this year. The lamps look like they are from the 19th century, but they are very much 21st century fixtures. Before the holidays, fairy lights were added to the poles of the light fixtures. It was great! But, apparently there is more to these lights. They can change color. This month, February, featured both Valentine's Day and the initiative to wear red for heart health,
The lighting changed at one point, too to reflect the colors of the Pan-African flag in honor of Black History month.
In any case, this park has been a God's send during the pandemic. It is a beautiful, shady park perfect for getting some outdoors exercise, having socially distanced picnics and conversations, and enjoying being outside.
The northern end of the interconnected parks features Kingsland Manor, a restored farmhouse built in 1768. Next to is are some small falls. Its just another beautiful spot and a reminder of the history...
Read moreI come to Memorial Park all the time. Even though I’m from Newark and not a local, I’ve always felt that the people in Nutley have a different — more laid-back and positive — attitude. This is a great spot for all kinds of activities, whether you’re out for a walk, bringing the dogs, or letting the kids enjoy the playground.
The park offers beautiful scenery, peaceful walking paths, and the chance to admire baby ducks and geese near the water. It’s also a great place to reflect and pay respects to our fallen heroes. I truly recommend this park for family outings, solo walks, or even small get-togethers — as long as we all do our part to keep it clean.
Now for the heads-up: there’s often a lot of geese feces on the ground, which can make you feel like you’re dodging landmines. It would be great if this was cleaned more regularly — it’s really the only major downside to an otherwise...
