Worst 2x experience of my life. They don't have a clue what they're doing. They're not at all trained properly to board, adopt, treat, much less complete a proper spay/neuter surgery. They couldn't get my kitten's name right, after 4×telling, and writing it down. Had to call m.chip company to fix it, which was a hassle, plus they weighed her wrong. That's a huge deal when it involves medicating them for surgeries! Unsanitary to say the least. Even the waiting room is disgusting. I'm a trained supervising Vet tech, and came from working,-one, of the top-two, Humane Societies in the country. With one vet, we managed to do 65-170 surgeries a day. All animals, all genders, public and adoptions. They test (If it's pd for) for felv/fiv, but don't carry the felv vaccine! Seeing how they put the cats all in one room together, how does any disease not get spread? They show you different cages, but I've been behind scenes and seen 40 cats in one room together, none had been tested, none had bloodwork done, they were licking one another, eating, drinking from same bowls, using same cat pans, very irresponsible! That's just the tip! They gave me such a hard time after I started asking questions. Because of their egos, they turned me away, accusing my animal of having frvcp, and being contagious. I'd had that kitten from 3wks-4mo, and it never once showed any signs of U. R. Not to mention, almost every rescue on the island has it anyway, lol. It's like the herpes virus, breaks out when stressed, or immune system is weak. My cats on the mainland had it, no big deal. Not only did she not have it, but she was tested for felv/fiv, and was negative. If they were property sanitizing the prep tables, surgery bed/areas, packs, towels, recovery area, cages, and themselves, why would it matter? Do her last, like you should with feral animals, I said. We can't. Then charged me an extra $40, to explain to the Vet that she had a sore on her lip from teething, I watched it happen, it wasn't a ulcer from a fvrcp break out, I even had the tooth. They told me to reschedule, I couldn't understand, she's a rescue about to go into heat. You're supposed to do rescues, high risk, and feral animals there. She went into heat 2days later, omg. I really didn't want to go back, honestly. But, I'd pre-paid, plus I wanted to prove to them they were wrong. Which they were...They did a horrible job, I felt bad for my kitten. I've done thousands of surgeries and recoveries, but she was hurt bad. Had to give her a cold pack for 3days. Her incision was 3"long, when it should've been an inch or less! It was choppy, zig zagged, glue everywhere, even on her coat, shameful. Then I noticed they'd shoved her m.chip in so hard and deep, it was rubbing on her shoulder blades, causing pain. She grew some fat around it finally, but I still have to take her to a real vet for x-rays, to check for damage. She would cry when it would get stuck under one. I've never seen one put where they put it, and as deep. A lady next to me had adopted 1 kitten, from a litter of 4, from that OASPCA, he was too young to neuter at the time of adoption, so they had her come back. While I sat there, they proceeded to tell her that she was calling her cat the wrong name, and that it was his siblings name. Then, they couldn't find the records, at all. I had to say something! As nice as I could, I asked, "In the records for the other 3 siblings, any mention of him, how many kittens in the litter, their names, payments made, and who adopted them?", they weren't happy I got involved. They said no! She told them how they won't even let you make an appt., without paying. Like the H.S., background check, fingerprint check, FBI check, license check, drug urinalysis, and strong interviews. This place needs to be shut down. They don't even accept Nueter Now certificates! The only good thing is, they have the mobile vacs, flea treat, de-wormer. Remember, they don't carry the felv vac, you'll have to go to your vet. It's really necessary out here, so keep...
Read moreTL,DR: They care for the animals, but not for the people. A "bad feeling" will keep you from adopting a pet.
I tried to adopt a dog with the Oahu SPCA. My wife and I visited three times together and I went separately twice to try to pick him up. We were told that we could take him the day that we filled out a form, so the second time we visited, we expressed interest in taking him with us, and asked about the process. The third time we came we took him to the outside pen to see if he would be a good fit for us, and we thought he was. When I went back by myself to fill out the form, I was told he had several forms put in for him already and that the best would be chosen. Fair enough, he needs the best home he can get, but they had already told me they don't hold animals and that I could take him the same day. So I put in my adoption form and they said they would call me the next day. I didn't get a call. The day after I decided to go to them in person to see if they had chosen, and was walked outside and told that the adoption coordinator had a "bad feeling" about me FROM THE DAY SHE MET ME. I asked why she didn't tell me this sooner because every drive was from Pearl Harbor, and all she could tell me was that she was unprofessional about it and she was sorry. She said since we were both military she also didn't want us to adopt a dog from them. I tried to explain that I don't deploy since I'm shore bound but she wouldn't have it. I was also accused of lying during my visits and on my paperwork, because my paperwork was "flawless" but she heard us say before that we wouldn't be home for twelve hours a day. This is coming from the person who didn't remember who we even were the first two or three times we came.
But she told me she would let me adopt a cat if I wanted.
Needless to say, I didn't have a good experience. We went to the humane society, they charged us fifty dollars (half off event) for an animal we love unconditionally with all of her shots, records and she was fixed, we saved an animal's life. I'd suggest you...
Read moreI like this place. It could use a bit more funding but overall I think it's good. I just took both my chihuahuas there for a exam, de-wormer, shots, heart worm exam, bordetella, and 4 rounds of revolution and it cost me $368 for both dogs. That's so much cheaper than anywhere else I would pay for all of that. Elsewhere I'm looking at paying that price PER dog not for both so that was nice. The vet tech that did the exams noticed my girls knee issue right away without me saying a word about it so that made me feel nice to know that she actually knew what she was doing. Also when I called they said they may not have time to do both dogs at once but they would try. So I made the appointment primarily for my girl who I suspected had worms. Well end the end they were able to take both dogs in and took care of both of them without rushing through one or the other. They also said they were able to get the heart worm test done today which was a big relief because living all the way on hickam, this is a bit of a drive so I'm was super grateful they were able to get everything taken care of today and now my puppies are fully vaccinated and have everything they need for the next year. Thanks SPCA the low cost services you provide really help people maintain good overall health for their fur babies
The building and areas around arnt the nicest like I said it could use a bit more funding. It smells like a low end vet and looks about the same BUT that has not and will never stop me from using this place. You cant help how a animal smells. Baths only do so much and this is a small place. So of course its gonna have a funky smell. I'm a little shocked people complain about...
