In all the years I've been visiting the Oregon Coast and going up and down the coast I can't believe we've never stopped at Fishing Rock State Park! I don't even remember it coming up in Google searches for things to do near Lincoln City! How is this possible?
Only thing we can come up with is that its Oregon's Best Kept Secret and locals don't want it overrun with tourists and ruined.
I felt a bit of fear heading into the dark canopy made by the trees but the fear soon turned into nostalgia, because as a kid I used to play inside something quite similar, just not nearly as expansive or cool!
It was like walking into an alien world, so dark and cold. The ground was spongy from the years of duff underfoot. Mushrooms, spiders, seagulls, moss and pretty flowers everywhere. Beautiful short hike to the point where the waves can be seen, powerfully crashing against the large rocks below. It was a very impressive show!
Steer clear of cliffsides, most are undercut badly, and very unstable!!!!!
The dirt parking area may hold 10 or 15 vehicles but not many more than that.
No need for a map of the trails really, they are numerous and go in many directions, and all lead to the same destination, just keep going toward the sound of the crashing waves and you'll get to the end!
This place will always hold a special place in my heart because my boyfriend decided it would be the perfect place to propose marriage! We had the place to ourselves for an hour or more both times me went. The second time we packed a lunch, it was windy, but doable.
I'd recommend using a restroom before you go, because there isn't one on site. This is a family-friendly stop - but be sure to keep an eye on the kiddos, those undercut edges will Kill anyone who dares to go close enough. They're deceiving for sure! My boyfriend was even tricked by one! Didn't even think about how close he was to his death until we saw it from...

Read moreDefinitely off the beaten path! The parking lot is small but I have never seen it even close to full. There is a sign marking the entrance, though in truth there's only one spot you can enter, owing to the dense shore pine. The trail is uneven and more labyrinthine the farther one goes, but eventually all paths lead out to the rocky peninsula with spectacular views of the ocean. On a clear day you can see south to Boiler Bay and north to Cascade Head. A word of caution: my co-worker and I, on a dawn telemetry run, encountered a man--presumably drunk, judging by the container at his feet--sleeping (passed out?) while slumped over on a horizontal branch. We were able to creep past and do our work, and that was the only time I encountered this, but it's worth being aware of nonetheless. Also, no bathrooms... As evidenced by the occasional wad of tp in some of the more...
