Lorna Dune Park: A Modern Walden in the Heart of Orlando
As I wandered through the gates of Lorna Dune Park, I felt the weight of worldly cares lift, much like Henry David Thoreau's departure from Concord. This unassuming oasis, nestled amidst the urban bustle, whispers secrets of simplicity and harmony.
"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation," Thoreau penned, but here, amidst the sun-dappled oaks and gentle lakes, desperation dissolves. The mini-golf course, a modern-day equivalent of Walden's bean-field, invites contemplation and playful competition.
As I strolled along the winding path, the splash pad's melodic chatter of children echoed through the air, reminiscent of Walden's pond on a summer's day. "In wildness is the preservation of the world," Thoreau wrote, and here, the unbridled joy of youth finds solace.
The playground, a haven for unfettered imagination, stands as a testament to the beauty of simplicity. Unencumbered by the trappings of technology, children engage in the timeless dance of play, their laughter carrying on the breeze.
And then, the humble bathroom, a nod to the necessities of human existence, much like Thoreau's own cabin. "Simplify, simplify, simplify!" he implored, and here, the basic amenities serve as a reminder of life's essential rhythms.
As I approached the lake's edge, a soft-shelled turtle poked its head above the water's surface, a modern-day embodiment of Walden's timeless wisdom. "In the wilderness," Thoreau wrote, "I find something more dear and connate than in streets or villages."

Read moreVery unfortunate when you go to a public park and they close the splash zone for a private party I didn’t even know it was possible to reserve a splash zone then we all should reserve it!!!I brought my kids to the splash pad and we were turned away by staff because it was closed for a private event. It’s a public park, so that was really disappointing. There was a sign, but we didn’t see it until after we got inside. I wish they posted this online or gave better notice — my kids were excited and left upset. Public spaces should stay open or be communicated...
