Lack of Sheen: Fresh onions should have a dry, papery outer skin that feels smooth and crisp, often with a slight sheen. A dull appearance suggests they are old or have been stored improperly. Peeling and Bruising: Peeling skin can indicate dryness from age or poor handling. Bruises can lead to soft spots and internal rot. Rotten in the Middle and Internal Stems/Sprouts: This is a definite sign that the onion is past its prime. Sprouting means the onion is trying to grow, which uses up its internal sugars and can make it taste bitter. Rot in the middle means it's breaking down and could harbor bacteria. Why this might happen: Storage Issues: Onions need to be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. Refrigeration can actually cause moisture to condense on the outside, leading to mold and softening. If onions are stored improperly in the supply chain or in the store, their shelf life significantly decreases. "Rejected" Loads: While it's hard to confirm if a load was truly "rejected" and then still made it to the store, it's possible that a batch of produce was not up to standard and still ended up being sold. End of Season/Long-Term Storage: Depending on the time of year, some onions might be from long-term storage, which can affect their quality. What you did was appropriate: Notifying staff: It's good that you spoke to an employee and manager. Their agreement with your assessment suggests they might be aware of a quality issue with that particular batch or supplier. Going to another store: If a store consistently has poor quality produce, seeking alternatives like Superior Market, which you found to have better produce, is a good solution. Superior Grocers emphasizes "Superior Quality, Superior Variety, and Superior Value" and claims their produce is "delivered fresh from farms everyday." What you can do going forward: Continue to inspect produce carefully: Always check for firmness, dry and intact skins, and absence of sprouts, soft spots, or mold. Consider returning the bad onions: Most grocery stores, including Stater Bros., have a satisfaction guarantee. You could bring the rotten onion back for a refund or exchange, even if you already bought...
Read moreI had placed an order for my grandson's birthday cake on a Saturday with the intent to pick it up the following Sunday. The following week when I went to pick it up they didn't know anything about it. The pastry chef told me not to worry she would get started on making it right away. I told her what I wanted which was a full sheet, red cake with blue spiderwebs. She said she would do her best but the spiderwebs were going to prove a challenge. I was grateful that she didn't say no and she agreed to make the cake. After she finished we both looked at the cake and agreed it was a semblance of what I wanted. It was the right colors but the web looked more like squares and the cake itself looked lumpy and uneven. I know it was not here fault as she was under a lot of pressure to get the cake done and she gave it her best. She called the manager and he was so compassionate and really tried to help. Even though the cake didn't turn out the way I had planned I was still very grateful the pastry chef didn't say no she couldn't do it and turn me away. The manager didn't have to be nice and sympathetic and discount the cake. These two people made an experience that could have been bad to a not so bad one. PS: When my two year old grandson saw the cake he yelled...
Read moreTo Whom It May Concern, I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience at Stater Brothers. On December 29, 2024, I purchased 200 pieces of chicken from the hot deli for an event. Unfortunately, the chicken was so excessively salty that most of my guests couldn’t even eat it. We had no choice but to throw most of it away because of how overpowering the seasoning was. This was a complete waste of money and completely unacceptable.
I immediately contacted the store and spoke with the manager, who requested my receipt, the date, and the time of purchase. I provided all the necessary information and was told I would be contacted regarding a possible refund. However, I never received a follow-up—no call, no resolution, nothing.
I have been a loyal customer for years, frequently purchasing chicken from your hot deli, and I have never experienced an issue like this before. Clearly, someone at the store made a mistake with the seasoning, yet instead of addressing the problem, I was ignored. This is beyond frustrating.
I expect a response and a resolution immediately. Ignoring a long-time customer after such a major issue is unacceptable. Please let me know how you plan to rectify...
