Montag's puts the "friendly" in FLGS.
I've been to several game stores throughout the country during my tenure as a full-on tabletop gamer. I've encountered a full spectrum of pleasant and downright horrible service. Going to Montag's regularly has easily topped my list as one of the best places for gaming.
The owner is one of the reasons why I love going here. He stocks quite a diverse bit of products. I've found things in the store I have otherwise been unable to locate locally. The things that he didn't have on hand he gladly ordered and got to me in a very timely fashion, and I've placed orders for some obscure stuff. When I ask about a product that I would assume wouldn't be deliverable he went out of his way to accommodate me and I wouldn't expect anyone to do so.
The groups that play here are also very accommodating. I like playing Malifaux and this place has a great group here for it, and they've been really open with welcoming a new player - which isn't always the case at some stores. The games played here are very diverse, I've seen 40k and fantasy games side by side with x-wing and Mordheim. I've also seen Infinity played here. Coming from a gamer who plays a billion games too many this is a breath of fresh air, as some stores gravitate toward a few games more than others and it's hard to get new game groups going. Here you're more likely to find another player into the game you're wanting to play that day.
I'm not saying there aren't any Houston area stores that don't have any of these factors. There are, and some are great. All I'm saying is that Montag's sets a high bar for service, and in today's market where online shopping for gaming becomes more practical I find myself wanting to pay a bit more and be more patient for shipping just to...
Read moreMontag's is seriously the BEST card shop in the area. Not only do they have a multitude of games and activities to aid in whatever awesome-nerdy hobby you're into, but there are a ton of events to play in as well. You can show up and not only are you going to be greeted by a member of the wonderful staff (usually including Guy, the amazing owner), but (based on the people who play Magic The Gathering) quite a few really cool players as well. Whether you're a gaming expert or a just buying your first pack of cards, there's always a chair and kind person there to help you test a deck or give advice on building one. There are so many options when it comes to places to play, as well as where to buy all your tabletop or card games and accessories, but I truly wouldn't recommend any other place than Montag's. I've come to this shop for over a decade and have ALWAYS been welcomed with so much kindness. It brings me total joy to see how my husband is just as warmly welcomed as I have been too. We would rather drive 30-45 minutes to go to Montag's, knowing we're going to have a great experience, than a card shop down the road from us. Walk in, give it a try, you won't regret it....
Read moreIt's been my go-to game store for almost a decade. The owner is able and willing to order almost any product relating to his current inventory without issue. The customer base is mostly Magic players and tabletop gamers (Warhammer, Infinity, Warmachine, etc..) although different days are set aside for different games.
The store often hosts at least 2 different tournaments throughout the week. If you are more of a casual gamer, you can come in pretty much any day to play a game of your choice (some days the store is a little too full for that, though) but if you're just interested in learning the manager, employees, or regulars are willing to give you a quick rundown of the game at...
