I visited the fair in October of 2019 and again in October of 2024. Since 2019, the quality has either stagnated or decreased while the price of everything has increased considerably. The photo of the fake security camera in our cabin on the RCS ferris wheel just about sums up the entire fair experience: looks good on the outside, but everything is as low quality as possible on the inside.
The food. All of the food vendors were extremely overpriced and "generous helpings" was certainly not in their vocabulary. Moreover, the food was unimpressive, generic, and rather flavorless; a massive disappointment considering a single sandwich (which was literally a meager scoop of beef spread across a soggy hotdog bun) cost $23. The fair is especially unaccommodating of people who have a lot of dietary needs/restrictions like I do.
The rides. Most of the rides cost $10 - $12 in tickets and many only last around 90 seconds. Fortunately, that meant the lines weren't long at all, but I saw many of the rides (especially the ones for children) running with only one or two people on them, which is rather wasteful.
The animals. The animal barns were cleanly and didn't smell unpleasant, but the animals themselves looked downright miserable. Most were curled up in the back corners of their cages or nosing through their woodchip bedding looking for shreds of dried out crab grass to eat. The situation was sad at best and unethical at worst.
The vendors. Lots of the vendors in the vendor halls (not the ones selling food) were actually really friendly, and we had some fascinating conversations, though that likely wouldn't be everyone's thing. Some of the vendors were selling extremely overpriced rings you can buy in bulk on Amazon claiming they had handmade them. Avoid those and the vendor halls can be a fun experience.
The shows. The quality of the shows was lacking astronomically. The "monster truck show" we saw involved watching people get into the back of a monster truck and get to do two loops at each end of the dirt track just to be unloaded and have the process repeat. The driver looked bored out of his mind, and each ride only lasted around 90 seconds. The other shows were equally as disappointing: a juggler begging for applauds after juggling four bowling pins for around 30 seconds before dropping one, two men doing mediocre country covers, and three female singers dressed like clowns tw*rking for their vast audience of fourteen people (ten of whom were children under the age of twelve). This isn't to say there weren't better shows at other times of the day, but this was everything we encountered (we stopped to watch each act for between five and ten minutes in order to take in the full scope of the performance). All that to say, the couple I saw who managed to flip a picnic table over on themselves (causing the meager rations they had acquired for lunch to spill onto their laps and the ground) was far more amusing than the formal entertainers.
The games. We didn't play any of the games (they were also rather overpriced but not as bad considering some did have a winner every time). We talked to some of the people manning them, several of whom admitted they had no idea how to win the games and couldn't do it themselves, but that isn't sufficient evidence to claim they were entirely impossible.
The bathrooms. To end on a high note, since 2019, the bathrooms have increased in both availability and quality. In 2019, there were a lot more outhouses and fewer permanent bathrooms with running water, so this was definitely an improvement!
TL;DR: While the sights and sounds of the fair can be quite a vibe (we definitely enjoyed the view from the farris wheel and our ride on the Titan), the whole place, from the food to the rides, is extremely overpriced. You're better off to save your money and go somewhere else like Schnepf Farms' Pumpkin &...
Read moreWhat can I say? The Arizona State Fair is life. It’s what I live for every year. The world is a much happier place with the AZSF. The rides, OUT of this world. They are rides you usually find on European fair midways. They are intense and amazing. The company that provides the rides RCSfun, knows what they are doing. All the rides have a bangin’ awesome sound system! They maintain their rides and keep them at 100% potential at all times! They also usually refurbish or repaint the rides every other year which is very nice and applies a lot to their “clean midway” look. Now for the food. It’s tongue immersive. It hits perfect and satisfies way more than just hunger. The animals in the barnyard are a great addition too. If that wasn’t enough for you, there are crazy stunts and monster trucks almost always happening in the grandstand. And with a lot of different activities to do at every corner (around 10 feet apart if not, closer) you simply cannot do everything in just 1 day. There is a lot of proof online that states the Arizona State Fair is in the top 3 state fairs in North America. To me, it seems more like #1 best because the ride lineup rcsfun brings is just too good and rare. I am always my happiest at the Arizona State Fair. Service: Staff are surprisingly nice, and funny for having to go through all the trouble of basically putting up a small city and making sure everything’s good for operation to the public. Price: Prices used to be cheaper but it all balances out when you realize all the new additions and upgrades we have been getting. The prices are not bad at all for what we are getting! Crowd: Im going to give you some AMAZING tips on how to avoid or sustain large crowds. Thursday: Back then it used to be completely empty but now with the association of unlimited ride wristbands they get VERY VERY full. My tip is if you’re a hard adrenaline junky and want to enjoy your time. Go as early as possible. Preferably right when they open at around noon. After 8pm the fair starts emptying and at around 9:30 it ends up being almost completely empty. This is good for those people who enjoy long and better late night rides cycles Wristbands are only available on Thursdays and end at 8pm so choose wisely! Friday: isn’t too badly full. More of a calm day to take in the fair atmosphere and enjoy! Saturday: Is around the same as Thursday only difference is that there is no unlimited ride wristband. It usually stays packed until 10pm. It starts slowly emptying and you can have some fun late rides during this time! Sunday: A little less packed than Saturday. Another calmer day to slowly enjoy and partake in most activities. Transportation: It was pretty easy to get there. I live in Mesa so it was a pretty chill 15 minute drive. My only tip is to use the northern western parking lot because it is never too full, good price and not far from the fair (literal 2 minute walk to...
Read moreWow times have changed. The fair lacked discounts, no more free tickets for shopping at Fry’s, no get in free hours, no separate adult an kid pricing, etc. Now ages 8+=$15 each! No outside WATER, food or drinks allowed, they’ll force you to throw it away! I understand the food part, but no water/liquid allowed and risk of dehydration in hot AZ heat! My stroller was searched, ok but it was dark, later I realized I had a big hole torn into the bottom storage basket, I use it daily and know for a fact it wasn’t there when I first loaded it into the car! I couldn’t even find any water stations, no restaurants will give you a cup of water with food purchase, $5 for a 20 ounce bottle of water! $50 only gets you 40 tickets and no sharing the unlimited passes or wristbands between kids! This place was highway robbery at its finest! Turkey legs used to be $8, now $20.26, what is the extra 26 cents for anyway? This was worser than movie theater prices! If you have multiple kids 40 tickets is not nearly enough to try a variety of games and rides out. I didn’t see any booths to redeem free read and ride tickets! It used to be kids under 5 could draw pictures now it’s only for age 5 and up! Over $40 for ONE cheese pizza with no toppings an average flavor, some fountain drinks 10+ dollars! Funnel cake $16+, $10+ for cotton candy/popcorn/corn dogs, etc. What is the point of a free park and ride lot, if you still have to pay money to take the shuttle that was free before the pandemic!? Closer $5 lots now $15+ for parking! Unfortunately, once I added stuff up I realized the rides weren’t worth it. Instead of buying any ride tickets, or more overpriced food, I cut my loses and went home early without wasting another dime. There are plenty of CHEAPER options out there for family fun. I hadn’t been to the fair in almost 10 years, going post pandemic with these prices made me realize I’m not missing anything, I could go many more years without going, I might not go again until I can get in free with senior citizen pricing. The advertisements are built to draw you in. The concerts don’t include fair admission. I hope things will be more reasonable one day. I regret going, wish I could get my money back, but now I know your not missing out, why spend trying to win prizes and big stuffed animals when you could just buy one for way less than you spend trying to win. Why buy the food when you can just go to a nice restaurant, or find it cheaper elsewhere. This was a big depressing disappointment. I won’t be back...
