As I walked into the entry way I smelled turning fish. This may have only been a negative odor to my western sensibilities so keep in mind that this review is from a white man's point-of-view. Those of you looking for a Whole Foods atmosphere with swanky lighting and hipster stockers, you ought to avoid this place. If you are looking for a traditional Asian market stuffed to the gills with any sort of Asian rarity you might (or might not) desire, this is the shop you are seeking. I like to peruse the exotic sauces and find something that looks like it will be painful. The vegetables looked fresh enough despite what other reviews claimed. And CHEAP! We loaded up a few bags and were pleasantly surprised by the price. I am currently eating one of the better dinners I've had in the last couple of months thanks to Lotus. Read moreLotus is always a wonderful trip...I've been to probably a half dozen asian markets in Pittsburgh, and this is my favorite by a pretty large margin.
Why Lotus? After all, there are other places with larger inventories, or more expensive/exclusive offerings. The truth is this...Lotus has really reasonable prices, great selection, and the selection itself is unique to their store.
Other stores might offer, for example, more brands of noodles, or a wider variety of produce, or more fresh fish selection, or a sauce that you can't find at Lotus...but I haven't found anywhere else in the city where you can get ALL of those things at the same place that offers the same quality and variety that you'll find at Lotus.
It's truly a hidden gem of the strip. Check it out for yourself...just give yourself an hour or so. There's a ton of great...
Read moreIt's located in the strip district of Pittsburgh on Penn Avenue. This is the only place I can find eel sauce which is actually unagi sauce. It's the kinda sweet thicker soy sauce that you will get at Asian restaurants. I like the kikkomen brand the best because it's thicker. The other brand is good but it's a lot more runny. I always get a Ramune drink for my daughter. It's like their version of pop for lack of better word. As a little kid her and her friends liked it because there is a marble in it. Don't worry parents there's no chance of the marble coming out and it's not a choking hazard. They also have a good selection of sea week snacks that are reasonably priced. The place is huge containing many items unfortunately I can't read most of the packages and there can be a language barrier when...
