There are a couple of phenomenal aspects to this Westin, and a couple of things that disappoint. Overall, it's a great place to stay and I would stay again.||SERVICE|Excellent. Upon check-in, I asked for any available upgrades and as a Marriott Platinum, I was given a corner suite. This was perfect for traveling with a young child to give them their own space with a rollaway bed in the bar/living room area, which is separated from the bedroom by a door. The front desk had to put in some work to make this room available and get me the rollaway.||LOCATION|One of the phenomenal things about this property. It's in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, easy to reach from any direction you might use to come into the city, and about 20 minutes from the airport with light traffic. It's convenient to the T, and walking to the Strip is reasonable, especially in decent weather. For me, the location is ideal.||ROOMS|You can tell that this hotel has been around for decades, despite the renovations. The overall design of the rooms, with the bathroom door opening into a tub/shower combo, is obsolete. It has that archaic hotel room design feel, especially in the suite, where the bar area is designed like it was in the 1980s. This is not to say the decor or appointments or furnishings are dated, it's the architecture itself. Despite that, the corner suite is huge with ample space (except for the bathroom, which cannot change). Everything that can be updated has been updated to Westin standards - showerhead, bedding, etc.||AMENITIES|The other phenomenal aspect of this property. The fitness center is incredible for a hotel gym. I can safely say that this is the best hotel gym, especially considering it is not a "partnership" gym where the hotel has an agreement to allow guests to use a 3rd-party facility. No, this is all Westin. There are two huge rooms, one with dumbbells up to 100 lbs. (!!!), two barbells, a squat rack, plates, and plenty of machines, both strength and cardio. The second is more of a studio, with a massive amount of floor space, kettlebells, TRX trainer, and mirrors. It's unbelievable for a hotel to offer a gym like this. On the downside, the locker rooms are REALLY dated, and the "steam room" is a disaster. It is not cleaned or controlled as it should be, and instead of giving you the relaxation/decompression feeling when you open the door, you are greeted by the smell of mildew and mold. It's disgusting.||FOOD|The restaurant buffet offers great service, but the food selection is not up to Westin standards. Omelettes are not an option, and the hot items are pretty much the same you'd find at Springhill Suites.||OVERALL|Tremendously good in a few areas, and decent in some others. I'd definitely...
Read moreThe location of hotel is great and it is convenient to the David Lawrence Convention Center. The staff appear friendly and helpful though overly cautious as to what you are doing. The gift shop is open late in the evenings for anything you may have forgotten.
I am disappointed that they appear to no longer have the pool on premises and are instead focusing on the gym. I would rather have the pool. We come to visit and relax and the gym is not for us. It is a very nice gym if you are into that kind of thing.
There is only one microwave in the whole hotel which is 26 floors at least. Each room should have their own microwaves especially for the price of staying in the hotel. They do have valet parking. The parking garage under the hotel is nice and easily accesses the hotel. My only complaint is the cost of parking in the garage which should be included in the cost of your stay if you are staying in the hotel. And it was high for those of us that don't live in this area for a couple nights stay.
Best thing about the hotel is the shower and it's location to the conference center. There is no exhaust fans in the bathroom. The beds we had were not comfortable for 2 people and this was standard room. TV was a nice size. There is also no continental breakfast but there are two restaurants on premise. The one on second floor is mainly for breakfast and cost the 3 of us 60 dollars for one meal. Buffet style so it was nice but kinda high at least for us. Our room was at the end of one of the halls so it was fairly quiet. But the chair for the desk was short and not comfortable. The other restaurant appears to have great drinks and food. I am not sure how I feel overall. There are pros and cons to the stay. Judge for yourself if you come to the Pittsburgh area. Oh and there is a Starbucks close by of you need your coffee.
Oh and I forgot to add, the bathroom in the lobby is just for guests. You can't get in unless you have your key card. I was really frustrated because we had checked out of the hotel but didn't leave right away as we went for a walk to downtown Pittsburgh. Upon return to hotel to get my car I had to use the restroom and was completely at a loss when I couldn't get in without a key card which I no longer had. I might have been able to get in had I asked the front desk staff but they were busy and I was just unhappy with the situation. I don't live in the city so was surprised when bathrooms were locked. I don't remember it being locked two...
Read moreMy husband, 2 boys and I stayed at the Westin Pittsburgh Convention Center August 3-6, 2018. The staff there were very welcoming- especially Danielle. Danielle upgraded us (because of our Gold Status) to the 25th floor and looked for a room with a great view for my boys. We were visiting Pittsburgh to attend a baseball game at PNC Park and the boys were very excited. The view from the room was great. We all looked forward to the ‘Heavenly bed’ experience. The boys had a good night’s sleep in their bed and said it was comfy. My bed, on the other hand, was far from ‘heavenly’. It was hard, I had trouble sleeping, and woke up with a sore back and hip. I worked out at the gym (I was hoping a workout would loosen my aches) and the man at the gym check-in said I should say something to the front desk even if I wasn’t ready to switch rooms. My husband said that the bed didn’t seem so bad to him and that I should sleep on the bed another night before saying anything. We had a very busy day ahead of us and the thought of repacking and changing rooms was not appealing- nor on our schedule- so I agreed. Big mistake. Saturday night I again had a lousy experience- back and hip aches again- this was definitely NOT a ‘Heavenly Bed’ and I was exhausted (and not just from walking all over the city). I went to the desk on Sunday and told then my situation. The woman at the front desk told me that she would have happily changed my room if I had said something earlier. I will also note that the bed wasn’t the only thing that was disappointing! The carpet in the room was gross-- clearly needs to be changed. It appeared to have been vacuumed, but was somewhat sticky from lots of use. My husband walked barefoot and discovered his feet were black from walking on the carpet when he took a shower that day. After that neither my husband nor I walked barefoot in the room. The toilet in the bathroom had a seat and cover that was too small for the base of the toilet! The toilet was an oblong commode and the seat was oval- which left the front of the commode exposed- gross for a woman to have to use a toilet like that. On a positive note, the location of this hotel was ideal- in the heart of downtown- we never needed to take our car out. The gym was beautiful! It was a pleasure to work out in such a great space- especially for a hotel gym. Overall, I would say that this was not a great Westin experience and don’t think I would recommend this...
