I can’t even put into words how amazing the New Hazlett team is. Had my wedding here 6 months ago and have struggled to write this review. The venue speaks for itself. It transformed into the perfect intimate reception space we were looking for with plenty of options to customize it to what we wanted. It was simply stunning. Half way through planning Tru took over the event and was nothing short of spectacular. He was supportive, truly cared about our vision, and worked with us to make our dream reception space come to fruition. Tru and Kevin truly understood how important it was to us (as craft beer lovers and many memories spent with friends at the early days of Grist House and my husband being from Germany) to have our couples drinks be from Grist and Germany. Kevin worked closely with us to make this special touch work by getting the two special beers and working with us to use custom beer glasses from Germany. Dylan also understood our vision and ensured that the lights, neon sign, and DJ were perfect. Overall, our experience was nothing short of spectacular and we can not thank this team enough, including René, who worked with us during the staff transition midway through planning. If you are looking for a unique wedding venue and a team that truly cares about your special day I can not recommend New...
Read moreIn its many incarnations over time, the New Hazelett remains a wonderful resource to the Pittsburgh arts community. Primarily a rental space for Pittsburgh's small and midsize theater companies, the space adapts to almost every production type. This theater is especially suitable for avant garde works which want to work at multiple levels.
Worth mentioning is the New Hazlett's CSA (Community Supported Arts) program. This program invites emerging and mid-career artists to propose larger theatrical productions to a juried panel. Chosen applicants receive technical, fundraising and promotional support from the theater. The end result is some of the freshest, most engaging theatrical and/or multi-disciplinary productions the city has to offer. I especially enjoy the "talk backs" at the end of the production.
As a person with mobility issues, I find it challenging to enter. Not all disabled people use wheelchairs. The long ramp for entry, the double set of steps and the distance of parking all influence what I choose to see. But, since it tends to have the most relevant contemporary programming in the city,...
Read moreI went to the Flamenco Fiesta Jan. 23, 2014. There was free on-street parking . There was additional pay parking in the "fish lot" next door. The building was in an urban neighborhood so I followed the recommendation of locking my valuables in the trunk of my car. But nobody broke in. There was a security guard on duty. The exterior is Romanesque-church-like. The interior did indeed have a fatigued red brick decor. Some old windows were blocked out but not with plywood as another reviewer asserted. And there is no factual basis at all that the restroom was bad smelling. The mens room was clean and up to date. There was a bar and a pleasant bartender in the foyer. The performance space was well lit and miked. Acoustics were fine. About 250 seats were distributed around three sides of the performance space on two levels. There was a cloak room but no attendant. But nobody stole my coat. I had a great time. I recommend this...
