I stayed one night at this Springhill Suites in Plainfield after arriving at the Indy airport from Montreal. Let me begin with the big positive: I didn’t expect to feel as at home as I did from check-in to sleeping to packing up to leave. Brittany at the front desk at night was wonderful; she was friendly, personable, and willing to go above and beyond for guests. Please send her my gratitude!! Shuttle driver Tom (?) and the general manager (forget the name, eek!) were two other staff I interacted with, and both were excellent at their job. Particularly with Brittany though, I imagine it’s tough to work night shifts, and she seemed as eager to give valuable service as ever. She also covered the cost of a taxi I took without hesitation, for which I was so appreciative (learn more below).
To shift toward a negative aspect I had with my stay, I must state that (technically) this hotel and its management company is operating illegally. This is because they offer a free airport shuttle that can not accommodate individuals with power wheelchairs, thus discriminating against those individuals who require their chairs. The discrimination is super subtle and easy to miss, but it exists. I got a bit frustrated at the airport, scouring lists of taxi companies that could offer a wheelchair-accessible service. Uber and Lyft are not accessible. All the taxis I called told me they either did not have wheelchair vans or could not give me one at the time I needed (midnight). With extremely limited options, I deliberated what to do for over an hour, already very late at night. Finally, because Delta Air Lines is the best airline, I worked with their baggage office to park my wheelchair in their office and then take a regular old taxi to get to the hotel. I can only walk short distances, and I was in pain walking to the taxi within the airport and throughout the hotel. I’m glad my chair was safely put somewhere, and I’m glad I made it to the hotel to fulfill my reservation, but I lost time I could have been sleeping or easing my anxiety because I had to find transportation.
When at the hotel, I greatly appreciated that the hotel covered the $30 I spent taking a taxi. I am not the person that demands things like that, and I felt slightly bad requesting them to do that, but at the same time, I wanted to resist letting the problem go. Technically, I was discriminated against, and I need to be treated equally like an able-bodied guest. I hope the hotel (company) will rectify this flaw in their operation, and I would be happy to work with them to provide my advice/support. I am confident we can fix this together!
Just one more need for improvement, much less crucial: the room I slept in was not in tip-top shape. There were a few sketchy stains in the bed sheets; I didn’t think it was as clean as it could have been. (Being nearly half asleep and unable to do anything else, I made do with the issue.) Another interesting observation was that whenever I walked past the Springhill Suites’ signature work desk (super helpful desk for working!), the desk lamp seemed to be really loose or poorly-made. It was either the lamp or possibly the desk itself, but it shook very noisily each time I moved past it. It was like the screws holding things together were out, and after a while, it got somewhat obnoxious. If I were staying longer than one night, I would request that issue to be investigated.
Other than that, I caught up on much-needed travel sleep at this hotel, which is truly all that I cared about! All the amenities you’d expect at a Springhill Suites (free breakfast, WiFi, personalized service on the TV, etc etc) were present. My rating will climb to those full five stars if I see changes made with the shuttle service and room cleanliness. I cannot thank Brittany and the crew enough for demonstrating awesome hospitality, though. I will hold off staying again for now, but I will try again a bit later in the year if I need airport...
Read moreThis is one of those places where if you don't look close enough (i.e. don't actually stay here), it looks fine enough. Spending a few nights here has proven otherwise.||Things started OK. The shuttle was good and mostly prompt, which was helpful after a red-eye. But after arriving is where things went sideways.||The front-desk person was nice but not really interested or particularly proficient at her job. No mention of my elite status or bonus points, no upgrade offer, etc. ||First, my room had compost-levels of humidity. Even running the AC couldn't remove the mildewy swamp-scent. Next, I found a condom (unopened, thankfully) under the luggage stand and the lotion container on the bathroom sink was 3/4 empty and had a pubic hair stuck in the lid. W-T-F ?!? Not a good start. At this point most people would complain, but there were people sitting outside their room on the floor in the hall bc they couldn't even get IN to their rooms (and the reception desk couldn't fix the issue), so I was still ahead of the game. ||Turn on the TV to find the TV channels are not aligned with the Guide. Figured out that they were either +1 or -1 of what was listed. So now math is involved to watch TV. It was also a low-rent Dish satellite system, so it would pixelate every few seconds. But the best was that ESPN & ESPN2 just "disappeared" after 12 midnight like Cinderella. Complete black screens for both channels. F-M-L. ||Tried to use the internet but it wasn't connecting, seemed like it was some ratchet set-up to bypass the Marriott standard log-in protocol. Called downstairs, only to be told "yes we know, just click skip and don't try to login, just use the general no-PW wifi". So no Bonvoy upgraded-internet and instead, some garbage scotch-tape and paperclip wifi that only provided NINE mbps up and down. I'm not getting any remote work done with that. ||I can go on and on about other things like the "blackout" curtains being too short for the window width, the breakfast being thrown together like it was for your in-laws that you don't like, etc, but the final insult was the clock on the lobby video display near the elevators is FORTY-SEVEN minutes behind the actual time. Why and how ?? That's some grade-A level not GAF on the part of this property. Stay somewhere else unless you, too, do not have any _ left to give ... #DoBetter||PS - the location was close to a Cracker Barrel which is why it gets...
