Let me start by saying I love Peaks Ice Arena and love the experience I've had working here as an employee and now getting to be a customer. I've spent countless hours here and consider it my second home. There are things I love about the facility and things I struggle with as well.
PROS: I love the skate pass that comes with the Triple Play Pass. I also enjoy the ability to weight train in the Fieldhouse in addition to skating. Public Skate times are reliable and it is rare something gets scheduled over them. Employees are friendly, accommodating and make an effort to get to know regulars. Having two sheets of ice is great for splitting up all the events and sports. Lot's of locker rooms, bathrooms and space for everyone.
CONS: (I am only going to talk about things I have communicated with Peaks staff about and still haven't seen a change in). Scheduling. Hours shrink during the summer although there is less demand for ice. If you look at the schedule online, the ice has lots of time where it is not booked and not being used. I have always seen at least 1 front desk worker and 1 zam driver there during these times and think it is terrible that we are all having to fight for ice time when the workers are there and ice isn't getting used. I also consider this a huge waste of city resources considering you are still paying for the utilities to keep the ice frozen. Just book the ice! You are not loosing money putting people on. You are loosing money by just having it sit there while you have the staff to run ice time. And yes, both Drop-In's on the weekend are full after 3 days of them being posted in MindBody. There is a demand. I also see an issue with the league not having room for the demand of players. Communication. The Adult Hockey league is great but needs to be improved. The current season has been pushed back and we have had 0 communication as to why it was pushed back and when it will start. I hope we hear back soon but haven't heard anything or seen anything posted on...
Read moreI dont like to give a star rating, but im giving a 4 as of now.... I have 2 kids in the skating lessons they offer here. They never skated before. For the classes and the price, it was definitely worth it. By the 3rd - 4th class, they were skating by themselves. They both passed there their lessons on the first go around. (They say a kid may need to take a class 2-3 times before moving to the next level) Overall, it was really good. One thing I wasn't happy with was the teacher, Sophie (snowplow 1), was only there 1 time out of the 6 classes there was. Which was lame because the 1 time she was there, she was great, even helped my kid with some snowplow 2 stuff. The other 5 times were a different substitute every time, who seemed to not have a clue what the kids were doing. Thankfully, with hard work and out of lesson practice, my kid passed the class and won't have to have her as her class teacher. Arika (basic 1) was absolutely amazing. Always there, super nice, communicated with us, and encouraged me to take adult lessons! My kid learned a lot from her. Where as with Sophie, dad mostly helped, as a parent is allowed to be on the ice if your kid is in snowplow 1. I would recommend skating at least once a week outside of the lessons as it helps the child a lot going back out on the ice for their next lesson (what we did). We have already signed up for the next coming classes. With public skating, it is very crowded but wasn't an inconvenience at all. Everyone is super nice and understanding, even if you're holding on to a wall...
Read morePeaks Arena is a great place for ice skaters of all levels.
They have multiple ice rinks, have hockey leagues you can join, take ice skating lessons, have private parties (with a reservation), public skate times (look at their calendar), and more that I have not listed on here.
Peaks Arena is fairly priced for most things and does provide skate rentals.
They also have concessions if you get hungry and facilities that are clean.
It's a fun time! The only thing I wish would change if they put a cap on the amount of people the allow to skate on public skate nights.
It's way too crowded and dangerous. If one person falls, they more often than not create a huge pile up due to the amount of skaters allowed of all ages.
That's my only recommendation. If there is a limit for the amount of people they allow on the ice at a time, it needs to be halved. People of all levels and ages on public skate nights going maybe 2mph (basically a slow walking pace in speed) due to how packed it gets just isn't worth it.
My final recommendation is to provide coat racks and booths for people to put their shoes and coats in. I have had countless things stolen and destroyed because hundreds of people kids and adults come on public skate days. They trample everything with no care for people's property. This could easily be implemented as their is space.
Other than that this is a great facility and can be a lot of fun depending on the time you...
