At 20th and Cary Streets stood the warehouse leased to Luther Libby in the 1860s. In 1861, the Confederacy seized the warehouse and used it for a prison. Thousands of Confederate officers were held at Libby Prison. In 1888, the building was purchased and rebuilt in Chicago as a museum. In 1893, the structure was a part of the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. The Libby Prison in Chicago was demolished in 1900. The site in Richmond is part of the flood wall. There is a plaque commemorating the site of the prison.
