I really enjoy the open atmosphere and the friendly, eager staff who are clearly proud of what they purvey, and on my second visit I'm happy to confirm that they have much to be proud of with this "big" little pie company, and their large selection of fresh, scrumptious, meat filled, vegetarian, and sweet pies, and traditional British groceries. Ordered: Pork Verde Pie - The pie crust on all the savory pies is the same; rich, perfectly seasoned, flaky, firm and buttery, and the perfect vehicle to transport, in this case, juicy, tender braised pork with Verde sauce that added a very mild hit of Tomatillo flavor to the filling. Every bite on this weighty wonder was better than the previous! Sausage Roll - I've tried many sausage rolls and the giant served at Proper pie Co. far exceeds any I've had. The sausage filling was juicy, tender, gristle free, and over the top tasty by adding just a little yellow mustard on this baton of savory bliss. Strawberry/Rhubarb/Blueberry Pie - The fruit had a bit of toothsome texture, allowing the flavor of each variety to perform solo before blending into a rock star trio on the tongue, and held firmly in a filling that was not overly sweet, and a crust that encompassed all the hallmarks of pastry perfection. Chocolate Raspberry cream Pie - I'm going to gush a bit, because this was the best piece of chocolate pie I've ever eaten. Sumptuous, semi-sweet, velvety smooth chocolate and cool, sweet and fruity raspberry fillings entangled to dance divinely together under a blanket of whipped cream, over crunchy chocolate crust that raised every taste bud on my tongue in an ovation of gastronomical applause.....Perfect First impressions can be lasting, but I've learned to always try something or somewhere twice before discounting them wholly, and in the case of "Proper Pie Co." not returning would have been at the expense of one of the best culinary experienced I've had in Richmond. Proper, Proper Pie indeed!

While in Richmond a local told me about this place and I am so glad they did. I went to St John's to see the reenactment and this is located just up the road, quite literally. Currently you have to order on line. So I ordered while stood outside the shop. I ordered the Pork and apple pie and the Blackberry, Lemon and ginger for afters. Don't judge I walked about 4 miles to get there so... As soon as the order was in I simply walked up to the hole in the wall and there it was pretty much ready and waiting. The girl at the counter was extremely nice. The pies are similar to the hand pies that are served in England and I have since learned that the couple who own the company are from New Zealand which makes total sense. These are the perfect size for one meal and can be eaten outside which I proved that day. Sat on a park bench just across the street in Patrick Henry Park and enjoyed a great view of St John's church and grave yard. Both pies tasted great! The pasty on the pork pie was flaky but substantial enough to hold the filling. The lemon and blackberry was just the right combination of sweet and sour with just a hint of ginger to make it perfect. Really enjoyed both pies and will visit again if I ever find myself back in Richmond.

I came in on a Saturday, a little after noon and there was a line out the shop, but nothing could stop me from getting a savory pie as soon as my nose sensed their flavor seeping into the airwaves. Not going to lie, I was extremely devastated when I saw that they had run out of the veggie brekkie pie, as the only vegetarian option they had left was a Thai butternut one—which I would have been eager to devour had it not been for my coconut allergy. Seemed like luck was on my side, because when I asked the very friendly woman at the front whether they had anything else vegetarian, she revealed that they had a few of the veggie brekkies left. OH. MY. GOD. I don’t know how they do it. First of all, the crust is utter perfection. Never too flaky, nor too stiff. The insides are heavenly. Cooked, creamed spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, a divine egg—it all took me to cloud 9. My friends got the regular breakfast pie, and their experience was equally revolutionary. I split a buttermilk raspberry slice to hit my sweet spot, and the consistency of the filling was something else. Melted in my mouth in all the right ways. I live in NYC, but I’m willing to make the commute down just to get my fix of Proper Pie.

Haven’t been here since before the plandemic. Was a favorite. Business brought me back to town and I thought no better place to be then Proper Pie on a bitterly cold 5 degree day! Now I can’t I unsee what I saw. Felt like I entered the twilight zone. Front door converted to a walk-up window with a microphone to speak order into. 2 masked workers behind the plexiglass standing as far away from eachother and from the ordering door as possible. Guess they didn’t feel safe, even with the stupid masks on and the plexiglass covering the ordering hole. Good pies was a part of it. Charm and good conversation at the counter, while enjoying those good pies, was the rest of it. Now, customers have been reduced to standing out in the cold like barnyard animals. The irony is that I didn’t feel any safer for all the perceived “safety measures” they have in place. It was a mentally disturbing experience. Thank you, but no thank you.

The pies are good. The tipping culture that exists at this location, not so great. Last few times I’ve been I’ve felt immense pressure to tip. On one occasion, a complete stranger in line loudly and publicly commented on how “little” a friend of mine tipped for their order. Heads up, there’s no discreet way to decline to tip. You can’t touch the console and the cashier exclaims, “would you like to leave an optional tip?” loudly to everyone in line as they check out. Take note, I’ve tipped every time I’ve ordered from here and the pies are tasty. I just wish they’d increase the price of the pies and get rid of the predatory tipping practices. It’s American to tip for service but feels weird to be pressured into tipping for handing packaged take-out pies over a counter. Enjoy!

By far my favorite restaurant in Richmond! They have a really great system to get people fed quickly. They are a wonderful team. There are 2 tables and plenty of bar space to eat, if it's busy you can cross the street and eat in the park. There is only street parking available and that can sometimes be tough to find nearby. They have a ton of different savory and sweet pie options. There are vegetarian and vegan options as well. They are really good about pointing out big allergen risks (ex nuts). They have soup, coffee, ice cream, and all of the divine food to feed your belly and your soul. They are always sweet and make you feel welcome. I couldn't recommend the spot anymore. I love it so very much. I aspire to be like them!
