UPDATE since June 6, 2025: A few weeks back, I complained about the service in here outside of my two favorite cashiers. I have been in here two times since then, and I have to update my review. The service changed. Zero idea if the owner reads these reviews, but there has been a 180-degree turn. I'll probably always favor the two cashiers I described in prior posts just cause I naturally warmed up to them from casual conversation over the past couple of years, but my shoulders are no longer slumping when I don't see them. To me, that's all the more reason to go back to a four-star review. Thank you!
ORIGINAL: I absolutely love this grocery store: the fruit is fresh, the prices are reasonable (minus Just Eggs), and they have everything I need. There are two cashiers who I think are super pleasant and friendly, and I'm always excited to see them over the past couple of years. (I really wish I knew their names. One looks Ethiopian. I know the other one is European because she and I have talked about our moms and holiday plans. She's a blonde.) The staff stocking fruit and the security guards don't really talk much, but they're polite and give me a head nod or help out if I ask a question.
So why am I giving this grocery store three stars? I try as much as possible to dodge two of the cashiers. Their energy is so off-putting. It's somewhere between judgmental and overly confident. I went into the grocery store today. I saw one of the women (dark-haired, maybe in her 40s, on the taller side) texting at the register. The store is empty besides me and the employees. I ask her if she's ready and smile. She scowls and continues texting. I put my items on the register. She's still texting.
I take my items off and go to the lady across from her. This other lady is OK. She's not as hostile as a third, dark-haired lady with the creepy, piercing eyes. (I flat out refuse to go to her line. It is no accident to me that I have watched people stand in opposite lines and not move over when she's free.)
But this third lady is neutral: not friendly but not unfriendly, not warm but not cold, just sorta getting through the day. All three of them seem to prefer to just talk to each other instead of the customers, which is OK with me as long as phones can come down long enough to let people buy items.
When I turned to leave, that same unprofessional cashier who was texting finally put her phone down long enough to help a guy who popped up in the store after me. She and the piercing-eyes-lady would fit right in at Cermak Fresh Market, a grocery store I dodge like COVID.
But I REALLY REALLY REALLY like this grocery store. I wish those two would work at CFM and allow the positive energy in Morse Fresh Market to...

Read moreI have lived in the Roger's Park area for over ten years and have shopped at Morse Market regularly in that time. Over the past five years, my boyfriend has been making multiple trips there a week. But today, while he was shopping, he was aggressively confronted by the main owner/manager of the store, accused of trying to steal, and threatened to have the police called on him.
I do understand that, given the neighborhood we live in, the store probably has issues with shoplifting and need to be somewhat cautious. I also understand that my boyfriend tends to look and act rather unusual so this might be perceived as suspicious. However the reason for this is because he is disabled and can't help it so to profile him as a shoplifter on this basis and treat him with immediate hostility is discrimination. An ordinary person could probably come to the logical conclusion that it would be the best idea to use the carts provided by the store, rather than trying to shop with their own bags, for a wide variety of reasons.
However, the brain of someone on the Autism spectrum works differently and they may not be able to deduce this on their own, but could be more than happy to comply if it were calmly explained that this was what was expected of them. However, because the store owner/manager decided to immediately resort to aggression and threats, my boyfriend came home in tears and is terrified to go back. We will not be shopping there anymore and the store has lost years of us being regular customers. In addition we will be donating the food he purchased there to a food bank as we do not want to derive any benefit from a business that discriminates against people with disabilities. I encourage others to...
