Crest Canyon Open Space Park, incorrectly called Crest Canyon Park on some maps, is a relatively small canyon tucked between neighborhoods just south of the San Dieguito Lagoon Ecological Reserve. The park’s unnamed loop trail has several trailheads – I say the trail is unnamed because neither the city’s map nor signs in the park name it. If you’d rather start your hike by going uphill, use the street parking on Racetrack View Drive and enter the trail from there. The trail heads south to Durango Drive which also has street parking. The loop is about 2 miles. The trails are sand/dirt and easy to navigate with the last section going to Durango Drive requiring you to walk up several sets of wooden stairs. The park is clean but involved in a major habitat restoration project. Some parts of the park provide a great vantage point for viewing the San Dieguito Lagoon. A short trail that is separate from the canyon but part of the park – and connects one part of Racetrack View Drive to another – provides a closer look at the lagoon.

This is an absolutely amazing area and highly recommended to check out. This is a beautiful, relaxing canyon that's accessible from multiple points along the side and at the end. It's a really unusual topological area where you see some beautiful nature and a rare treat to enjoy. This area, Torrey Pines Del mar, is filled with magic and there are more spaces of beauty and great energy in the nature there than most. It's a very special area.

I couldn’t tell you much about this park as I was just passing through and happened to see it and stopped off to take a quick peek. To be short and sweet…what a view my picture will show that. Swing by and take a look, there seems like there’s much to explore.

The Crest Canyon Open Space Preserve is a special little canyon saved from suburban development in the 1970s to protect endangered Torrey pines, sublime sandstone bluffs, and many other unique habitats, plants, and animals unique to coastal San Diego; Southern maritime chaparral, coastal sage scrub, California gnatcatchers, and Del Mar manzanita, among many others. Please enjoy your visit but help protect this place by keeping your dog on leash, carrying out and disposing of dog waste, staying on official trails, joining volunteer activities to pick up trash and remove invasive plant weeds, and remembering that this is one of the very few places along the coast left for...
