Salk Institute Beach trail — Attraction in San Diego

Dangerous! Not suitable for young children and even adults! We went with our 4 kids and 3 had a bad fall. The hike started off beautifully, very scenic and picturesque, however things got really difficult toward the end of the hike with the trail getting slippery and narrow. 2 of our kids fell down the canon into the riverbed, luckily to only suffer minor cuts (although a big scare!). Another adult fell in and injured his leg while I almost fell in and was literally clinging on the edge before someone gave me a hand. The injured man had to be rescued at the beach. A lifeguard there mentioned that many people were severely injured there. Waring signs were posted only to be destroyed. Due to the difficult terrain, many injured there had to be airlifted out and rescues are difficult. This trail either needs to be closed or better maintained. Current conditions are just NOT safe. This is for the small access trail from La Jolla farms road. It is great that city made it an access path and residents allow pass through. It is very well known to hikers as “Ho Chi Minh trail”. However it is dangerous due to lack of maintenance. The trail gets very muddy and people usually take the cliffs to bypass the shadow and buddy trail itself altogether. The cliffs have only mud and doesn’t even have grabbing points, an accident can result in broken bones or even concussion, just talking with a local there have been several incidents recently. Guys I don’t want the access path to be closed off because you just don’t want the trouble, however since it is an access path please simply get some gravel on the mud so that it is walkable hence don’t invite people to walk on the cliffs (yes you may have no trouble over that you are forcing that to happen with...

Should probably avoid if you’re looking for an easy hike, afraid of heights or hiking with kids.

Thrilling hike! Starts off with a rocky, slippery downhill hike. There’s a plank you need to walk on, some rock formations you have to squeeze through, some narrow ledges and a rope to use to get to the beach at the end of the trail.
