Perilous fun. Keep elderly guests at the base on the paths near the Community Center unless they are fit and have superior balance and walking sticks. Some trails are narrow, slippery on gravel and on edge of the ravine. Locals who are experienced hikers are fine and are seen walking their dogs. Newcomers may want hiking sticks for the top otherwise it's a safe walk. Beautiful canyon, lovely views, nice green tunnel part of the walk through shady vegetation. HUGE COYOTE POPULATION. One may see them day or night. Keep children close at all times, small pets on leash. Stay far from them, never run - they will follow. Best to walk with a buddy. If you accidentally get close back away slowly. If you need to defend, bellow/ yell like crazy at them, and if you must, throw a rock to deter. They are usually not a problem but ignorance is dangerous.
So, definitely not a carefree place to walk. But scenic. The base has a GORGEOUS Community Center, playground, ball field, dog area, picnic tables and restrooms. Remember to leave no trace. Bring your trash to a receptacle or take...
Read moreA surprising natural recreation area inside the city of San Francisco. There are several routes one can take depending on whether they want an easy, intermediate, or advanced hiking experience (although I wouldnt necessarily rate the difficult trail as such because it was really not very difficult). The trails wander through Glen Canyon and the rocky crags that shoot up off the sides and top of the canyon. Interesting nature and history displays are interspersed throughout the area as well. This is an excellent place to take a solo walk in nature, as it was surprisingly uncrowded when we visited. It is also well-suited for dog-walking or group hikes as well. I recommend taking a couple hours to meander up through the canyon and back down to the parking area. The canyon is also easily accessed with public transportation since there are MUNI bus stops along the top end of the canyon. The 44 route also winds through the edge of the recreation area as well. Highly recommended nature spot right inside the...
Read moreGorgeous setting for a wide variety of outdoor & indoor recreational activities for all ages. It has the only indoor climbing wall in San Francisco Parks. During the school year there is a coop preschool held here. The same facility also does double duty in the summer as a day camp. The fields are used for softball games for kids as well as adults, There also soccer games for young kids held here. The tennis courts here are very popular. People bring their dogs for off leash romps and walk or hikes on the various trails thru out the canyon that forms a part of the park. As if that weren't enough, during the summer the meadow in the park hosts the San Francisco Mime Troop for shows. There is a newly renovated recreation center where diffferent types classes for people of various ages are held & there are basketball courts which double as performance & meeting spaces. It is indeed a one of the best parks...
