THIS PLACE DOES MORE THAN FISHING CHARTERS! They also do day and sunset cruises around San Juan, which are amazing. Our sunset cruise was, without a doubt, the best part of our 3.5 day trip to San Juan.
We knew we wanted to spend one evening doing a boat tour/sunset cruise around the island, and bonus points if it provided alcohol or allowed us to bring our own. I originally found a similar tour on Viator (open to public/non-private unless you had the max people), but the date was blacked out due to the operator going on own family vacation. I looked through other Viator options and could not find anything that I felt good about--for example, one agency said you can only text, they would not answer any calls for any reason. I searched and searched for other sunset cruise options and finally found GetMyBoat and Captain Luis which offered a completely private cruise for the same price! I'm glad I kept looking because this experience was everything we asked for and more!
First pro: communication! From the beginning, Luis was quick to respond to any and all questions. He communicated the day before the trip, and provided clear instructions (including pictures) on how to find him.
Second pro: Experience-- Luis and Gaby treated us like old friends and made sure we were able to what we wanted with our time. (They even sailed a little longer for us)
Luis and Gaby started with a quick safety briefing then quickly let us take over as DJ and offered us sangria (which was delicious) and beer. They allowed our group to hang out at the other end of the boat for about an hour uninterrupted. Captain Luis then began telling us about some of the history of Puerto Rico. We had time to swim off the boat, and they took pictures for us. On the way back, Captain Luis and Gaby visited with us , telling us about their lives, asking questions about ours, and providing recommendations for what to do in OSJ and the surrounding area. Drinks were provided the entire time and his wife made us a beautiful charcuterie board. It wasn't small talk, but truly great conversation and laughs!
Third pro: Price This tour was the same as viator options BUT IT WAS PRIVATE to our group---win win! No having to worry about other people getting too close, being too rowdy/loud, or rude. It allowed us to relax even more.
I simply cannot say enough positive things about the service and fun Captain Luis and Gaby provided. I am a typical Type A lawyer, who has trouble relaxing/turning everything off, but for the three or so hours I was on the boat, I was just a thirty-something year old able to have fun and enjoy the ocean and surroundings. If we are ever able to return to Old San Juan, this would be my...
Read moreOk so the pros they are really good at keeping you informed about your trip the guys are nice and informative the cons all we did was troll for the entire trip i thought that we would have at least stopped maybe drop a line down and try and catch something. Nope trolling the entire time. We were upset that we only caught one fish but even more upset that we were not even allowed to set the hook you know like real fishing instead they set it then hand you the rod like your a kid and tell you reel it in. For the 1000 that i spent i was expecting more. Im sorry but the cons outweigh the pros i wont be recommending them to anyone
In response to your reply, what fish are you talking about? We got to see one and that was the one your crew hooked. who said we had a great time sitting at the bow of the boat, waiting for your crew to say anything or to do anything instead just throwing out the line trolling along for hours and when the only fish finally hooked, we weren’t given the option to run and grab the rod. we could have gone and grabbed the reel, but again not offered the opportunity to. You saying we had a great time and we had good memories all we had was a bad experience that we get to take home and tell people how much we spent on a very, very bad charter experience we were never offered the option to hold The reels or the option to bait our own hooks. We were just taking a very expensive boat ride, and one fish does not make up for the , horrible experience that we had with you guys.and yes i did tip. Why because where i come from you dont know if the employees are getting paid a decent salary so we tip because who knows that might...
Read moreI can’t speak for all the fishing guides at the academy, but Luis Rovira gave us an incredible experience.
My friend Jeff and I know nothing about fishing - both of us sit behind desks for work all day. With that said, even though Luis has decades of competitive fishing experience, he was patient with us as we worked through some foolish rookie mistakes. It was like Michael Jordan teaching basketball to a couple uncoordinated 4th graders, yet he remained patient and optimistic with us.
Your fishing experience will not solely be about the catch (if you get a catch at all), it’ll primarily be about the hunt, which I didn’t realize would be so cool. I’d steer at times and watch out for frantic bird activity while Jeff would be in the back keeping the bait clean and working the reels. We were such novices, but Luis made us feel so critical to the mission. I can’t emphasize how cool that felt.
We wound up having a couple close calls that were eventually capped off by catching two beautiful yellow fin tuna. We didn’t get a marlin like I’d hoped, but Luis really made the experience well worth it!
Thanks again Luis for being so accommodating, being patient with us through our goof-ups, and providing us with such a great experience overall. Highly...
