River Run Park, in Sheridan, CO, is a blast during the summer. I've always called it the "Oxford ave. surfer chutes." I have run through the chutes at 200-350cfs with tubes and at 400-1100cfs on an inflatable tandem kayak, ALL being a lot of fun. (I have plenty of youtube videos of kayaking & tubing. My channel is "Colorado Wing") Best part, it's relatively safe at any level because it's quite easy to get to either side of the river if you get dumped. Waveriders/surfers at the chutes are very inclusive and wave you through, whatever floating device you're on, when it's safe to do so. Basically, they don't "hog the wave". Everyone's there for a good time. It's even fun for families to hang out along the banks to just stay cool in the water. The surrounding landscape on the east side is done very well with grass and large boulders to relax on. Bathrooms are at the top of the bank and parking is plentiful, shared with the Broken Tee golf course. I have NEVER seen the parking lot completely full. Also, if you want to tube more than just these two chutes, an easy .9 mile walk up the bike paths will give you access to 11 more man-made chutes. Anything above 150cfs, out of Chatfield dam (google "south platte flow chart Chatfield"), will provide a fun-filled floating time on this stretch.
Not just summer fun, but year-round, River Run Park is relaxing to sit by the river. Enjoy this gem in...
Read moreI love the fact that Denver has invested in revitalizing the platt river both from an ecological and public use perspective. River run park showcases the effort with great amenities like parking, bathrooms, bike paths, seating, a surf wave, and nice grass. There is a hood group of people that watch out for each other on the wave and we had a great time. Will definitely be back and hope that Denver continues to improve the platt and make it more useable like this. Next time your in the area come...
Read moreIt is a small park but it has some very fun river rapids for tubes. There is a grass terrace on one side for picnics and relaxing between rides. The river has two rapids right at the park that can be quickly ridden and walked between. There are also 10 more rapids up the river that can be accessed with a longer walk or car ride to Union Ave and then end at River Run Park. Warning: A few rapids are quite intense and will likely knock you off, don't ride with...
