Four score and many years ago, we made our journey to Springfield, Illinois, to behold the humble abode of President Abraham Lincoln. As we approached, the charm of yesteryears beckoned us forth, with the cobblestone streets and period houses whispering tales of the past.
Upon our arrival, we found ourselves in the midst of a tour, already commenced by a dedicated guide. Hearts filled with curiosity, we did, with careful stealth, blend into the group, unnoticed by the many, as the tales of Lincoln's life unfolded before our eager ears.
The house, a testament to Lincoln's enduring legacy, stood proudly with its relics and furnishings from an era long past. Each room, a chapter of his life, from humble beginnings to the highest office in the land, spoke volumes to all who would listen. Most notably, the study, where Lincoln himself once pondered and penned his thoughts, stirred a sense of awe and reverence within us.
In the end, whether our entrance was noted or unnoticed mattered little. The experience of standing within Lincoln's home, feeling the echoes of history, was an honor and a privilege. Truly, it is a destination for all who seek to understand the roots of our great nation.
(Tried making it sound like a speech from Lincoln. 😅 It was definitely a cool experience history buffs should visit at least once in...
Read moreSuperb visitor center. One of, if not the best visitor center I've ever been to associated with the National Park Service. The visitor center has two theatres to handle large capacity crowds. On the day I visited, one theatre was in use showing programs with comfortable bench seating. The visitor center was showing two different movie films every 30 minutes. The first was a general summation of President Lincoln's time in Springfield. It was well acted and extremely interesting, especially for history and Lincoln buffs. A second film was showing giving a virtual tour of the Lincoln home. We watched this as we didn't have the additional time to wait for another tour. The film is older but still very informative. In fact I would recommend doing the tour and the virtual film as I would suspect you will have a more complete picture of the home with both the visual and historic stories presented in the film. In addition I want to say a virtual tour film is exactly what these visitor centers need as many visitors are not able, for whatever reason, to tour...
Read moreLINCOLN HOME NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE- Saturday was a beautiful day to go on a walk through Lincolns old home in Springfield. This was an interesting tour. I enjoy putting the pieces of the past together and learning about how society did things, then vs. now. What worked and what didn't. How things worked. It is so interesting seeing the "progress" we have made. Some good and some not so necessary.. This tour was free. The walk through Lincolns home was guided. It is best to schedule your tour ahead of time. After that, we were able to walk through a few other homes by ourselves and check out the neighborhood around Lincolns home. There is a cute little garden and a couple bee boxes. I did get bit a few times, so make sure to bring the bug spray or wear pants and tennis shoes. The parking is $2/hour, but on the weekend, street parking is free. Dogs are allowed, just not in the homes. Strollers will be left outside of the homes. No food or drinks are allowed in the homes. There is a fun gift shop inside of the visitors center. So feel free to leave with a souvenir...
