It’s difficult to describe my experience at The Abraham Lincoln Springfield – A Doubletree by Hilton Hotel as anything but enjoyable.
Upon check in, my room was threatened to being taken away by the front desk clerk Will. He informed me that I wasn’t allowed to check in using my wife’s Hilton Honors program. According to Will, my reservation would be cancelled if I didn’t call my wife and have her speak to Will and vouch for her identity.
Ah, but Covid and staffing shortages, right?
It’s easy to blame Covid, but now it’s a cop out. A recent search on Indeed shows that a housekeeper’s starting hourly rate at The President Abraham Lincoln Springfield – A Doubletree by Hilton Hotel is $14 as of October 1. Simply put, you’re going to get a $14 an hour property if that’s all you’re willing to pay.
On the other side of that argument, according to Hilton’s Second Quarter Results of 2022 filed with the SEC, Hilton paid out a total of $41 million in dividends to their shareholders. That figure begs the question; what would the housekeeping staff say if they received just 1% of $410,000?
The next issue is what some would assume to be the easiest part of the trip; parking the car. At first, I was able to park my car out front in the eight parking slots along the front of the building. The rest falls on the city’s adjacent parking garage, which looks nothing more like a cesspool for armed robbery and murder. But wait, the staff reassured us that there’s free parking on the street. However they neglected to mention that you’ll have to step over the homeless people on the streets and their crack pipes to get to and from your vehicle.
No coffee for the guests in the lobby. Oh there’s a coffee carafe, but getting anyone to add anything in it is like pulling teeth. We waited over 20 minutes to get anyone to do anything about it. Pack some extra utensils as Hilton does NOT provide rooms with any stir sticks.
The toilets also don’t work in the rooms. But did we call for maintenance? Yep. But the front desk doesn’t even answer the phone.
If you want to relax and watch your favorite streaming show on the TV, forget about that too. Our Hilton Brand Ambassador Will didn’t even know what a Smart TV was when asked. The TV in the room was a 2009 model.
Next up was never being instructed that our keys had to activate the elevator to even get to the 10th floor. Next up was the outdated and worn out mattresses. We didn’t expect perfection, but when the mattresses are curling, one can only imagine how many new mattresses could be purchased with just a fraction of that $41 million in dividends paid to the shareholders of Hilton.
Last was Springfield PD greeting guests at the front entrance with full lights on! Not only did that confirm my suspicions about the parking garage, but it also left us feeling terrified for our own safety. This property was the FIRST point of contact and first impression Springfield. The staff of Visit Springfield may want to reconsider their current strategy of leaving pamphlets at the front door, and schedule a sit down with Hilton to map out a welcoming strategy for tourists coming to their city. If Illinois can pay for a $30 million ad campaign featuring actress Jane Lynch, I’m pretty sure they can figure out a better campaign than leaving a stack of pamphlets on an empty concierge desk.
Springfield is supposed to be the crown jewel of all the Lincoln sites throughout the United States. The President Abraham Lincoln Springfield – A Doubletree by Hilton Hotel should be ashamed by exploiting President Lincoln’s name. This property is a black eye on the City of Springfield. Shame on Hilton for such careless disregard for a city that claims to be the crown jewel of Lincoln’s legacy. There is not one shred of Lincoln’s spirit of empathy or kindness to be found at...
Read moreAs a Hilton Honors Diamond member, I enjoy staying at different properties across the Hilton portfolio. I had been to this particular hotel once before about 8 years ago and had enjoyed it then. But face it, this is an old building, and age has not been kind to it. The front desk informed me that top to bottom renovations are underway, which was evident by one of three elevators being out of service.||Upon entering my room, I noticed that a metal piece of a corner near the door had fallen off the way and was on the floor on my way into the room. Thinking little of it, I put it back on the wall and continued into the room. I had arrived into Springfield after a very long train ride into Chicago, and another 3 hour ride from there to Springfield. Being 10:30 PM I just wanted to relax.||Fast forward a couple hours when I was ready to go to sleep. Ready for bed, I first laid down on my side to continue watching something on TV. I felt a pinch on my side where my skin was contacting the mattress. I looked down and saw something very small and black. Suspecting bed bugs, now I examined the rest of the bed. I found more black spots under one of the pillows. Well that ruined my night! No way was I going to sleep in that bed. The front desk having earlier contacted me by SMS text, I texted back a photo of what was in my bed, asking if these were bed bugs, and even if not, what was this doing in the bed?? While the person at the desk was unable to come up, he sent a security person up to my room. He looked at it, and also not being an expert could not concur what this was, but it sure looked like it.||The front desk did the right thing in moving me to another room. By now it was 2 AM, but I had to quickly pack everything and move to another room on the same floor. After inspecting that bed, I felt it was OK, and accepted the relocation. But in my mind, the experience down the hall prevented me from falling asleep right away, despite the fact that I really needed it.||In the morning, upon check-out, I explained to the front desk that the reason I had 2 plastic keys for different rooms was because of the suspected bug situation. No apology there, but she thanked me for letting her know.||Later in the day, after I had gotten back to Chicago, I got a call from a manager at the hotel. She apologized and said that she would have an exterminator come in and take care of the issue, as well as identify what that was. She would get back to me with the results. Meanwhile she was helpful in suggesting ways to mitigate the problem had any bugs gotten into my clothing or suitcase. Rest assured that the next night I did wash all my clothes and dried them on high heat.||Meanwhile as I write this on Tuesday night, the incident having happened on Friday night and the call with the manager on Saturday , I have yet to hear more on this. Bottom line is whether whatever in the bed is diagnosed as bed bugs, mold, or anything else, this should not have been on the bedding. Add to the fact that structural issue I had upon entering, plus some hairs found in the sink, and it is clear that housekeeping needs some retraining in keeping rooms clean and inviting for the hotel's guests.||Going back to my check-in, the hotel was out of hot cookies expected from Doubletree; the man at the desk told me to obtain mine in the morning. However I was so upset with what had happened that I never did get my cookie. I was happy to be out in the fresh air, away from that hotel, and on my way back to the...
Read moreWe stayed here for a National athletic meet. Upon arrival, the lady in Honors check in was rude and short. I figured she just had a hectic day checking in families non-stop. Rooms came with 3 towels for two people on a 4 night stay, they will not bring towels or anything unless requested, which takes a bit. General housekeeping and hotel staff were polite. Our room never seemed to cool even though we had it set on 65, I’m typically a cold person by nature. Tub/shower barely has water pressure and stays mainly on hot, scolding hot. The elevators are frustrating because you have to have your key to use them. The 4’ pool is locked behind two doors in the basement. The “gift shop” consisted have super small variety of drinks, fruit cups, & really nothing more. Rooms do not have fridges or microwaves unless you pay $100 more a night with that being only difference in standard and business rooms. Front desk staff present as bothered when trying to purchase out of “gift shop” & one staff was rude to my daughter when I sent her to get me a coke & charge to my room. Parking is a nightmare, they advertise $10 a day hotel parking, which is on the street. Covered parking is $7 if you park overnight, but they don’t volunteer that.
My reservation is as for 4 nights for which I needed to checkout early to take my kid to doctor. I checked with a Hilton Honors front desk staff the night before & explained situation. For which he checked my account and told me I would not be charged for early checkout. Following morning I packed and cleaned for an hour. Went to check out and the lady at the desk told me there is a fee but it’s less than a nights stay. I asked her how much & she advised $100, my rm is $135. I told her the man I spoke with might before said there would be none. She said that’s a Hilton thing & told me she could have a GM call me. I told her I need to speak to someone now & she told me to call Hilton. For which I did and Hilton honors advised it is actually the hotel that determines if a fee can be waived. She called hotel and they refused 2x to waive even though I have a 10 hr drive and need to get my kid to doctor for her injury. This would have not been an issue if I had not been told night before early checkout would not have a charge. Then I spent an hour packing to leave and cleaning. I do my best to make housekeeping staff job less difficult and not leave them messes. Then the lady lied at desk telling me that it’s Hilton when it is clearly the hotel. I am escalating my complaint and I am writing this scathing review, which is all truth. Not going to lie, when I saw the hotel is rated at an 8.2 and not only heard how the desk staff talk to guests, experienced it myself. I did forget to add that I called housekeeping to request fresh towels and trash bags, phones rolled over to front desk and the lady was rude. I let her know I pushed the housekeeping button and was not trying to call front desk for towels. I would caution against any other organizations using this hotel for events. I travel to national conferences multiple times a year for work, and have for years. This is by far the worst host hotel I have ever stayed in and by far the worst Hilton establishment I have...
