I had a disastrous experience. Nobody should have hair as ugly as mine. I almost cried during the haircut and spent the whole afternoon crying over the ugly hair that I got.
I have mid-short hair and asked for a shorter, clean cut. Instead, I ended up with my hair looking like an enormous, unfit baby hat on my head, way shorter than I expected, and way uglier than any decent female short hair should be.
I want to offer my genuine experience on 1. the communication, 2. the skill, 3. the overall satisfaction.
On the communication: My request for a hair wash was ignored multiple times. I communicated my concern at least two times about how I think it is necessary to wash the hair before we trim it. I told her that I don't come with perfect hair. But no, I didn't get the hair wash, and I left with my hair unwashed. I did get a reduced fare for not washing my hair, but honestly, I didn't come here to save money.
The hairdresser got defensive during our communication about how I wanted the haircut to be. I almost cried when my hair was half done. I told her it was already too short, leaving very little room for further trimming. And it was thick—I have very thick hair, and layers need to be done for a satisfying result. But my hairdresser immediately got offended, saying, 'I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE BEING TOLD HOW TO DO MY JOB.' and 'I DON'T KNOW IF I'M COMFORTABLE TO CONTINUE'. I apologized and told her I might have overreacted seeing my hair so ugly. Looking back, I really think I should have reacted more and at least saved my hair from getting shorter.
The hairdresser put her own pride over the consumer's needs and failed in communicating effectively.
On the skill: I am not a professional in hairdressing. I cannot comment on the specifics of what I think went wrong. I understand people use different techniques. Just to comment on the process and result: My hair was cut while it was messy from sleep. No wash/layer/structuring before cutting.
The hair was not clean-cut at the bottom. And with no proper layering or structure, it was asymmetrical in volume—too much hair in the front and not enough in the back. And the shape in the back was strangely ugly.
The outcome was utterly disastrous. The hairdresser failed in delivering a reasonable result.
The overall satisfaction: 2 stars for the chill vibe in the shop and the hairdresser's effort in 'making things right'. I have to give her credit for that, though it was too late and my hair was doomed. I was told I could go back if not satisfied. I don't think I will. After all that, I’m so thrilled to have found Sarah at Homegrown! Good blonde highlights take a lot of skill, and she absolutely nailed it. My hair finally looks the way I want it to!
