We had a great day today! One of our favorite things to do is tour historic homes on our travels. Today we visited the Lapham-Patterson House in Thomasville GA. It was built by Charles W. Lapham, a survivor of the Great Chicago Fire, as his 6000 square foot winter “cottage” in 1885. He suffered from significant lung damage due to smoke inhalation and psychological trauma and had hoped the advertised healing properties of the pine scented air in Thomasville would improve his health. Our docent Mike was a fountain of information about the 3 families that owned the home before it was acquired by the state of Georgia and designated a National Historic Landmark. Read moreA must place to visit while I Thomasville, a one of a kind house built in a very peculiar way by person with rare taste and fear of fire. The architecture is at odds with convention and the choices and plans are unique in their own way, our guide was very helpful and knowledgeable and answered all our questions. And we didn't know what was the use for an artifact at the pantry, so after some detective work I found out it is a hair curler for the hair style of the era... Weird.looking contraption... Read moreThis was a very beautiful and interesting home. This isn’t one of those places where you only see a select few rooms and can’t touch anything. You get to tour the whole home, even areas unfinished. You can go on all three floors, you can touch things, you can sit in many of the seats. This is a marvelous place to tour. You may want to call ahead to see when to tour, it’s normally open Fridays 1-4. I think they do tours only on the hour, but they may have just been today.
