They offer tourist items at tourist prices with only a few genuine farmers market stalls available to shoppers. The management is greedy and uses funds irresponsibly. They also don't care about the local wildlife or the local population of townspeople. It's actually a beautiful city park but the events they host and then charge money for always supercede the residents enjoying the park. If there an event that happens to be on a weekend or a Friday or a Thursday or anytime basically - especially when it's nice out or when it's golden hour on the lake - you'd better go to a different location because you aren't welcome at this one.
They recently demolished the entire structure surrounding and supporting an amazing ecosystem which included osprey and geese and called it an 'upgrade' to better serve the tourist's parking needs instead of being accountable to direct the flow of cars themselves or find alternative parking options.
I personally watched them fill in a lovely pond with dirt, just plowed it over burying koi and other fish alive as well as frogs and lizards. Then they took out a 3 million dollar loan to pay for that nightmare and recently said they'd somehow spent it all on cement, asphalt and of course plowing over the pond and taking out over thirty species of strong, old trees.
Now they have the audacity to beg local residents for more money saying they shouldn't have to pay to rent the park at all and telling us we should have to support their efforts to replant a few patches of marigolds. So far they've taken over $600,000 from Ithacans who got scammed into trying to help the park. Where did all that money go? That's the $3,600,000 question ❓❓❓
We owe it to the owls and the osprey and most of all the dead animals in the plowed over pond to stop looking the other way while rich people pretend to care about our community. I grew up with actual hippies so I know what a true farmers market is and this just ain't it. The produce is so expensive that even with the snap card double up points system, the neighborhood surrounding the market still cannot afford to shop there even though they are subjected to bad wedding DJs at midnight, garbage blown all over and constant backed up traffic patterns because lol, tearing down the park didn't actually fix any parking issues.
I gave it three stars instead of one in part because the market structure is sometimes used by locals to do yoga and hold drum circles and although the market doesn't promote people using it, they don't seem to stop them either (during off peak hours when nobody else wants it) so I guess that's something.also I was afraid if I gave the one star review it deserves they would spend more our my towns money to have their management company refuse to post it at all. A condolence letter just won't be good enough to fly on this abuse of natural resources and misuse of local trust and...
