I I’d visited Kirwans Game Store in the Poughkeepsie Galleria prior to the pandemic and was always impressed with their store inventory, cleanliness, and appearance. Since we’ve spent so much more time home, I have to say that the selection of games, miniatures and pop culture teams can’t be beat! I’ve been grabbing my DND minis there ever since and love the selection! Check them out if you are in Poughkeepsie or Catskill!

Their staff is very knowledgeable about the game Magic the Gathering. They were very friendly to a beginner like me, and have cards that are priced competitively with ones you might find online. They also have a section in the back where you can play with your friends, if they are not being used to host a event.

I don’t typically leave reviews, especially negative ones. But I had a rather unpleasant experience earlier tonight that I’m still thinking about hours later.

I came to this store maybe a month ago with my family and was excited for their Warhammer products, which unfortunately was lackluster with only a few kits. However my wife and sister in law got several MTG cards and got a lot of help with single cards and deck building.

Fast forward to today, and I wrote up a 40 card deck list and drove an hour out to the store because of the pleasant service my wife and her sister received last time.

I figured they might be busy and would have a hard time searching for cards while running tournaments and if the store was busy. When I got there, the store was nearly empty other than the people playing games at the tables.

I approached the counter and explained I had a relatively large deck list and would understand if they couldn’t help me right away. Instead the one gentleman on the counter essentially went on a 3 minute tirade about how “we’re in a mall and how it’s impossible to do multiple decklists if everyone has a bunch.” Totally understandable, but the guy made me feel like an asshole for even asking. Like all he had to say was I can’t right now, we’re managing tournaments. Not repeat himself multiple times after I said “makes sense” over and over. He did recommend I send an email with my deck list ahead of time and the store would contact me. Not a bad band-aid to the situation, but it would have been nice to know that before I drove an hour over the bridge.

I am more on the “social anxiety” side of interactions, but i want to support local game stores as they are a dying breed. Hence why I left two stars instead of one. But after the experience I encountered tonight, I don’t feel comfortable returning to the store.

A recommendation might be to add a kiosk that lists your available single cards in the store for people to access without troubling the staff at...

I have mixed feelings about this place. I've only come in here a handful of times & only made three purchases. On one hand they always have pre-release pokémon products, & it's reasonably priced for presale. For example the new Mega evolutions pokémon set. They were selling booster boxes a week early for $209 which is about $150 less than what champion is charging -(TCGplayer presale Market price). The downside is they're trade in percentage. I brought in about $60 worth of cards and was going to use it towards the booster box when The person behind the counter said that they were only going to give me $30 store credit. Apparently for store credit they only do 50% market value which is kind of wild. This is where champion outshines this place. champion generally does 70-80% depending on the card, for store credit. I understand doing 50% trade-in value for cash but for store credit is kind of bonkers imo. Makes me wonder how much they actually pay out for cash. If their store credit payout is 50%, what is their cash payout 15%? Or maybe they don't do cash payments. idk.In the end I wound up keeping my cards & just paid The 209 for the booster box. Also I don't blame them for selling sealed product at market price. The people complaining about that are just being unrealistic. The People that complain about LCS's selling @ market price have no business sense & They're still living in 2023 when you could just nonchalantly walk into a store & buy a 151 ETB for $50 & there would be 10 of them on the shelf. when product is scarce and market prices skyrocket a privately owned company shouldn't be shamed for not selling @ MSRP. they're a privately owned business That generally takes pretty decent losses every year. Where corporate companies like Target, BBY, & GameStop (although GameStop being a franchise), can afford to take substantial losses. GameStop charges 20% above MSRP BTW unless you have their $30 a...

I used to love this store, it’s where I bought Pokémon cards consistently for years and where me and my college buddies would play DnD after late classes. The people who worked there were dedicated and I got to have so many lovely chats with the staff. I was never exactly a regular but every time my old friends from cross country would come to visit I’d always take them. The state of the Pokémon scene is abysmal right now. I can understand higher prices on packs and singles. What I cannot understand is booster packs being OVER 2 times MSRP. Journey together booster packs, a set that notoriously isn’t that popular, goes for 13ish dollars a pack. For 10 cards. MSRP is about 6 dollars and most local stores will do 7. When confronted with this issue staff will deflect and say “go somewhere else” or “it’s to keep it on the shelves”. And I get it, prices are a loaded thing to get a question on, especial in this market it’s going to get heated. But these prices are a scam in my eyes. I’m hoping after this craze dies and people realize this is shiny cardboard and not a side hustle or an investment that this place can return to what it...
