I would highly recommend MJ Gabel to anyone searching for the best way to sell an unwanted diamond ring. I held on to a diamond engagement ring and wedding band from a previous relationship for nearly two years, unsure of the best way to sell it. I was unwilling to take a huge loss in exchange for the convenience of pawning it, and consignment at a local jeweler also was not financially attractive given how long it would likely take to sell and the percentage the jeweler would take. I didn't have good paperwork on the diamond, and didn't want to deal with Craigslist issues, so I was lost as to the best way to sell it.
Finally, I stumbled upon MJ Gabel in October 2014, through a referral from an online diamond publication. After leaving a contact request on their website, I was contacted directly by Anne Gabel the following day. Anne remained my contact person throughout the entire experience, and she immediately put me at ease despite my concern over sending an expensive piece of jewelry to a stranger thousands of mile away. Anne was very candid and direct about the quality of my ring, the options I had to sell it, and her suggestions for getting it sold as quickly and for the best price possible.
The mailing process was simple and secure. Anne sent me an insured packing label to take to Fedex and ship to her, and the receipt was my insurance. After she received it and examined it, Anne called me soon after with the results. The diamond was 1 carat, with additional carat weight in the setting, but it was I-1 clarity and had some real imperfections that I didn't know about before, so I was skeptical that I would get much out of it.
To me, this is where the real value of using MJ Gabel comes in. Although they wouldn't make a cash offer to buy it directly from me, MJ Gabel was willing to consign the ring on a brokers-only website and at various trade shows, which ensured that the ring would get as much exposure as possible. Most importantly, instead of being blind as to what price it would sell for, I gave Anne my "reserve" amount-- that is, the amount I wanted back for it, in cash, without any fees taken out of it. This enabled Anne and MJ Gabel to price the ring appropriately and ensure that both they and I would get the price out of it that I wanted. I gave Anne a range of costs I wanted to get back, and told her to lower the reserve down by $100 each month if she thought it would help me sell it.
The ring didn't sell right away, but Anne kept me informed about interest, upcoming shows, and whatever other information I asked of her. Finally, after a few months, Anne contacted me with the good news that the ring had sold near the top end of the reserve range I had given her. Ultimately I got back about 2/3 of the cost I'd spent on the ring 6 years ago-- far better than I expected or likely could have gotten from other sources.

After some internet searching, I came across MJ Gabel and saw that they were local (which was preferable to putting my ring in the mail and shipping it off to parts unknown). I made an appointment and within minutes of meeting Matt, I knew I was in the right place based on the way I was treated. Matt took a lot of time (after regular business hours) explaining the details of the diamond resale market, how the process would work and gave realistic estimates (based on data) on what I could expect to receive when my ring sold.
