The people are friendly enough. But if you visit their new building when the outdoor temp is less than 90 degrees, take a winter coat with hood and earmuffs so you don’t catch cold from the extreme difference between the comfortable outdoor temperature and the overcooled indoor air. Unfortunately the building’s A/C system doesn’t cool gently or indirectly. When the system is on it blasts 40 degree air directly at you at 10mph. Or so it feels. There is nowhere to sit during the service where there is not an A/C vent blowing overcooled air directly on you. There is nowhere to sit where it doesn’t feel breezy. If you’re like some of us, being subjected to a cold strong breeze for over an hour can get you sick when your body is acclimated to the hot summer Tucson weather. It felt like being in a walk-in fridge. It also reminded me of the old computer labs of the early 90’s where they kept it so cold the back of your hands would start to ache until you couldn’t type anymore.
It appears the leadership of this organization is caught up in the typical modern Christian belief that God’s kingdom only occurs in buildings, ignoring the fact that most of Jesus’ ministry was outdoors, on hillsides, in marketplaces, and along roadsides, as well as in homes and synagogues (existing buildings). Neither Jesus nor his disciples nor his early church entered into building programs or focused on buying real estate for training centers, worship centers, etc. No one in the early church would confuse God’s miracles (which were focused on people) with obtaining funding for buying a piece of real estate. But unfortunately that’s the focus of the leadership of this religious organization as well as thousands of other religious nonprofits across the country who have supplanted the building of God’s kingdom (people) with the building of real estate. Or at best they intermingle the two, to the detriment of the gospel. The early churches all met in existing buildings (homes or synagogues or the temple.) 3000 people even responded to Peter’s preaching under the open sky. But today’s churches limit God’s working to scheduled events held within special purpose-built buildings which sit empty most of the week. Such is dead American Christianity. We schedule a service and expect God to perform on cue. You could live a lifetime in such human religious tradition and never really meet God. Because God works outside the boundaries that people set for him. Thankfully God often still works in people’s lives in spite of their involvement in such errant tradition.
The singing was very repetitive and human-focused rather than God-focused. The lyrics primarily consisted of personal promises made to God instead of worshiping God himself and focusing on his deeds and attributes. (Since when is God impressed by assertions and promises borne out of human will, which hold no more weight than new year’s resolutions?) I think they were trying to wear folks down mentally and emotionally through short lyrical phrases and chord structures repeated many times. But that is again the tradition of modern Christianity in which we try to work up “God’s presence” (despite Christ being present where two or three are gathered in his name). In reality modern worshippers are worshipping the good feeling they get from the songs; not really worshipping the God that told the Apostle Paul how much he would have to suffer. The real God may also lead us through suffering if we...

Read moreLove, love, love the worship with this young gal today. She was awesome. Message was SUPER amazing. Great job Pastor! Wish there were more like you. Only thing is we have attended twice and people seem really unfriendly. It's okay because I am there to worship and hear the word. I got what I wanted and then some. I have found Tucson in general is not friendly. We are here for the winter from Wyoming. This will be my church home until April. Friends or no friends. I love also that you are somewhat connected with Bethel...
