I wanted to love this place but for reasons I'll describe I can't recommend it. I took my 20 year old daughter here for her first firearms lessons, choosing this in-city inside range over the plentitude of open desert ranges available. Zona makes you sign a waiver, embedded within the waiver is an agreement to pay for certain damages (fair enough). Among the "Damages" is language that describes striking the Target Retrieval System (the system that holds your targets). My little girl hit the Target Retrieval clamp..... BAM!! $20 fine.
Later, I myself as an experience marksman foolishly aimed my snub-nosed .357 at the target 30" down range and although I hit paper 5 times, I also hit the Target Retrieval clamp as well.... BAM!! $20 fine!
I have no problem paying for actual damages but striking the 12AWG Target Clamp with a soft nosed .38 round doesn't actually create damage. Both strikes were mitigated by 2 blasts from a can of white spray paint and yet I was charged $40, doubling the cost.
It should be noted I was not the only one charged for striking the Target Clamps that day, it seems to be a lucrative income stream for this company.
The employees are great, We even received a brief lesson from a female employee on how women should stand (different from men) and I appreciated the advise even as she announced my penalty for the two non-destructive hits.
Frankly I'd rather spend my time at the Pima County Southeast Regional Park, or the Pima County Pistol Club where you will not be not charged any additional...
Read moreThese guys are SAFE, and that's what matters ! I went there today, and when I was gearing up in the lobby with my 13 year old son, a couple of youngsters attempted to enter the store with rifles out of the bag. Their pistols were holstered, but I could not see the carry conditions of their rifles from my vantage point. Now, I doubt they were up to anything, but that's hardly the point, is it? The point is that before they even had one hand on the door to enter, the guy behind the counter was out in a blink (and by blink I mean smooth and therefore fast ;) ) and at the door and moving to secure the situation. Hand on holster, he greeted them calmly and professionally at the threshold with the appropriate level of command that said both "WELCOME IN FELLAS" and "FAFO". He informed them of the range rules, and they complied. I took a breath and went into teaching mode for my son's sake (And if you're wondering, I immediately moved my son from any likely line of engagement ;P). Thank you, guys, for demonstrating your commitment to safety, especially the ex-devil dog in the neck brace, as well as the older gentleman at my 9 that clocked the situation before it...
Read moreI will start off by saying if you need training at Zona Tactical, go to Joshua. He trained me. He is top notch. I am extremely comfortable around him and I got more than the most from a 1 hour session with him and it was fairly priced. On another note, I've never had an issue with anyone there. They all seem to be fine people. Now on to other reviews I've read LOL. I don't want to get too deep into this but if you don't have the money to pay for a $20 clamp hit or some kind of other small damage that you know you will probably run into because you aren't properly trained or if you bring a younger person who has never shot a gun before, you might want to reevaluate your finances before coming to ANY range. BTW, Unless you're renting at the store, a proper gun owner has a rugged gun safe with a lock on it, a cable to run through your weapons when it is unloaded and not being used, and a proper holster for their weapon. Before you go to any range, even if you don't own a gun, read up on some proper etiquette. Thank you Zona Tactical for...
