I've been to Valdez several times and I always enjoy a trip to the museum every single time. There are two locations that are walking distance from each other that allow entrance with the same ticket.

The main museum discusses the area's history with the Sugpiaq and Ahtna cultures, the gold rush, first lighthouses in Alaska, colonial settlements, the 1964 earthquake, and recovery after the Exxon spill in 1989.

The docent (guy from Juneau) was very knowledgeable and helpful in answering my many questions. Lots to read even if I've been there multiple times.

The second museum was in a non-descript building (easy to miss near the ferry terminal) spoke more about the moving of the town from it's old to current location. I even found the address of a friend's family on the model replica of the town.

There is a third museum, unaffiliated, at the PWS College but it was closed during my visit. Next time I'll check it out.

If you enjoy museums, give yourself 3-4 hours to thoroughly...

First class museum I definitely recommend. We didn't make it to the Annex due to time constraints, and only had an hour at the museum, so we didn't get everything out of it that we could have. Lots of information, organized so you could meander through the small main museum. They offered a ten person group rate (not advertised), but would've been worth full price. I like to get to know how a town views itself. The museum displayed its relics/artifacts and provided comprehensive details at times, but didn't necessarily tell a story about who it was now and where it was going. Valdez in many ways reflects the heart of interior Alaska and should show why and how it's...

An excellent local Museum highlighting the history of Valdez, just like you'd expect This Museum tells the local story quite well but the best part is the history of the oil industry, the oil pipeline that ends at Valdez, the oil spill and all the efforts after this spill that created the oil containment industry and system that we have today Filling in the history of the Exxon Valdez accident is quite interesting as well. After hearing the complete story you'll be even more dumbfounded how the captain managed to wreck the ship! It was a great museum with a surly docent, otherwise we highly...

The Valdez Museum has so much history about Alaska and Valdez including the Gold Rush & mining, firefighting history, Exxon Valdez oil spill, (largest tanker spill to occur in US waters), Valdez Trail (a historic trail that was a key route for people, freight, and mail and the 1964 Valdez earthquake (the largest recorded in North America with a magnitude of 9.2 killing over 30 people). Definitely a worthwhile visit!

Nicely laid out with good signage. Tells the story of Valdez from early times thru USA settlement and key events: gold rush, transportation development, earthquake, Exxon Valdez spill & cleanup. Tells story of local people & exploration. We were there about 2 hours. Cost $8 each for seniors. Informative films on key events and air transport development. Neat old fire wagon.
