Well, it wasn't an entirely terrible ski experience. People who give one star based on the snow on the hill need to remember that this hill is in New Jersey, not Vermont or New Hampshire, or even New York. For anyone who has skied a lot in climates with more snow, this hill will be an underwhelming experience. Only with luck will you have actual snow and not ice on this hill... but blame the weather, not the hill. Now let's get to the hill.
Food Choices are Poor - It is clear business is suffering, the lodges are pretty weak in food offering, and the resort is even allowing independent food operators (the waffle huts) because clearly the lodges are not able to make margins but skiers still want food. (Not just booze, though maybe snowboarders want that).
Trash - Unfortunately, the waffle huts have a trash collection problem, there was literally a pool of trash, uncollected trash bins, etc around the waffle huts. But that is not the only problem... The floor beneath the ski lifts is strewn with trash... This is probably more a complaint about other skiers/snowboarders, but why is the mountain offering drinks from the waffle huts, not having active trash services AND ALSO allowing people to just chuck the trash from the chairlift.
Lift lines not managed well and allows for bullying - so basically several of the lifts have multiple lanes for entry, which means that if people in one lane are more aggressive, they can push in front of other skiers, making the line experience a bit frustrating for people who don't feel like muscling ahead of the other people. I asked some kids whether they always just cut the line and they told me to "f* off".
The South Peak / Terrain Park is such a waste for skiers - No doubt this is an unpopular opinion with highly skilled snowboarders and I have no idea whether this side of the park makes the resort money, but it's basically wasted space for anyone who doesn't feel like doing tricks with their snowboard. It's a shame, there is a lot of ski space that's basically been ruined by an abundance of obstacles (ramps/rails/bannister-type-things).
Rentals - if you own your own equipment, this won't apply to you. Getting the equipment wasn't all that bad an experience except for a bit of poor service. It was actually pretty quick all things considered. Examples: ** The kids working the areas don't really have a good feeling for what customer service is, for example they should never tell people waiting in line to "read the signs", chances are if the signs are adequately positioned, that won't be a problem....and just generally being rude to customers doesn't make for return business. ** There weren't ski poles left that fit my height, when I asked for the kid watching the ski pole area to get one, he first tried to pass off poles that were too short, then he acted like it was an inconvenience and ended up yanking a pole of out the "damaged" bin (missing a ski strap and slightly bent). Not a huge drama, but it isn't exactly top notch service either.
Overall, if you are really dying for some runs down the hill, you'll get it here. There will be no frills, there will be no food, there will be rowdy snowboarders, but there will also be a hill with, at the very...
Read moreWell this one had it's ups and downs. The day started well with parking probably only because it was a weekday. Walking up to the Red Tail Lodge to get my lift card and rentals was fairly easy. See their ambassadors for lift passes and move right along to rentals. The kids at rentals were kind of busy on their phones but hey their kids. So the day started ok as of now since there was very little people at 9am. Got a couple of decent runs in starting in the sugar loaf area then headed to the gondola lift which was organized. After a couple of runs on Greens then to Blues. Still a nice day. After 1130am i noticed a greater amount of people started their day. Thats when the wild wild west started with no one following any rules and etiquette for skiing. People bombing runs from top to bottom and the GARBAGE. After a few runs i started to see a fait good amount of water bottles and wrappers all over the hill. No ski patrol anywhere in sight the whole day and i skied from 9am to 9pm. Such a disappointment to see how people treat the ski areas. The Red Tail Lodge had very poor food selections. Equipment layed out everywhere with not enough ski racks available for people. Overall this mountain could have been a good place but with it being so close to the NYC metro area it...
Read moreThe resort is terrible. I fell in the training area and screamed for help since it was my first time and instructor just stood and watched. He said "I'm not picking you up girl", when all I needed was someone to help guide me on how to stand up again. Finally when he realized I was really stuck, he came over to tell me to pop off the skiis, expecting me to already know how to. This was one of several things that occurred that day. The resort has terrible perfessionalism and was showing signs of prejudism toward me and my friends.
Another notable experience was when We were waiting in line to get our boots patiently. There was a little line and a non person or color came behind us a few minutes later. And the staff member asks "ok. Who's next?" So we inched forward to gesture we were next and he said "OK this lady was first" and took her to the other side bypassing us.
This kind of behavior is unacceptable and I cannot express my disgust enough. A place like this should be more open to other cultured people because we are paying just as much for the services.
There needs to be something...
