Like several other historic houses and sites in Virginia Beach, this one was unfortunately closed for renovations during our visit. While we couldn’t tour the house, we still enjoyed walking around the beautiful, well-maintained grounds and gardens. The gardens were a highlight, with plenty of shaded benches that provided a perfect spot to sit and soak in the peaceful surroundings. We had the place to ourselves, which made the visit even more tranquil. However, there is some traffic noise from the nearby roads, including the busy Virginia Beach Blvd. The parking was ample, but not sure how easy it would be to park here if it was open and busy. Despite that, we look forward to returning when the house is open for tours.

We had a good experience here, education wise. I took my kids to learn about games and how people lived back then. I suppose I should have researched more, though. This home belonged to slaveowners. The entire time I was there, I felt gross like we shouldn't be there. They did mention the slaves, but not in any detail beyond their "duties" of cooking and cleaning. It seemed to focus more on the almost lavish lifestyle of the homeowners. I think adding a detailed discussion about slavery to the tour would be beneficial and respectful to those that were forced...

This could/should be a 5 star historical site. But it's always closed to the public, and has been for years. It's under renovation, but I go by there several times a week (during traditional business hours) and NEVER see any laborers. Once in a while I'll see a contractor's vehicle, but.. It feels like it'll never re-open as a historical site, and maybe that is by design? Hope I'm wrong, because it is an invaluable piece of...
