It was locked when we arrived The building dates to a period when the south end of 17th Street, NW was a wharf and Constitution Avenue, NW was the location of a section of the Washington City Canal, which connected the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. An eastward extension of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O Canal) met the Potomac River and the Washington City Canal at a canal lock. The 350 square foot house served the canal lock keeper, who collected tolls, recorded commerce, maintained the canal and managed traffic.

This is a great place that has been restored. This place is open only on certain days and for a short time. I was here on a Saturday around noon when this place was open and there were rangers inside. They explained about the lock keepers house and what its purpose was back in the day. They also have some exhibits about how the landscape looked a few decades ago versus how it looks now. They also have a bunch of passport stamps that you can collect! This place is free to visit - no tickets are sold.

An interesting part of DC history worth the visit. Did you know DC had a canal run through it with boats? The park ranger was knowledgeable about its story and connection to the National Mall. There’s also an informative and entertaining digital movie that was a great introduction. And it’s air conditioned! Surprisingly this house used to be 3-floors.

This is a historic landmark on the Constitution Avenue, many people would have seen this going to and fro from work! This was a lockkeeper’s house when Constitution Av was a canal and they used to collect tax to enter it! This scenario is so mind blogging to me! That once all of national mall, was Potomac river!

This is free, no tickets are needed. It’s managed by NPS. The volunteer’s were amazing, they provided so much of history and they have posters and all to explain what it used to look back in 1800’s. They also have passport stamps! U can get your passport stamped here. They even provide you with free...
