Upon arriving, it was very confusing as to how to check in or park. Once the front desk staff came to the counter, everything was fine. They explained everything and assisted with the parking. They have more than one lot, so you may have to walk half of a block. The only thing is you will want to go directly to the front desk or you may park in the wrong place and unfortunately lots of the lots are not open 24 hrs or even 7 days a week. Check-in was easy to do. The gentleman helped with the doors and luggage. The rooms were extremely clean. I only gave it 4 stars because some areas needed repair, such as the bathroom door. It was crumbling on the bottom. Also, as you took a shower, the tub drained extremely slow, so you were standing in about 4 inches of water. There was a rainshower head for the shower with excellent pressure. The climate was controlled for you, so you couldn't adjust the temperature in your room. At night, the AC seemed to not be as cool, and we woke sweating. The room cleaning crew was AMAZING!!!!! When we came back from our outing, everything was neat, clean, and made up for us. All the towels were replenished. They even organized my daughter's stuffed animals and made her bed look so cute. For me, cleanliness and friendliness are everything, and this is where State Plaza Hotel would get 5 stars. Everyone was friendly and smiling. The only slight blemish is that I requested a cart when we left, and it never came. I had to lug all our things out with multiple trips to the elevator and car. All in all, that was the only bad thing.
Beds, Pillows and Bedding: Very Comfortable and Clean. I usually have a very hard time falling asleep anywhere, but not here. Their pillows were probably the best I've had, and I travel a lot with baseball.
Kitchenette: Full-size Refrigerator. Full bag of ice in the freezer. Four burner stove. All dishes and utensils for four. Toaster, Keurig Coffee and Coffee Maker, Microwave, Dish Soap, 2 chairs and table, cookwear. All of this was in its own little kitchen set off from the bedroom. It had doors so you could close it off. It was SUPER clean.
Bedroom Area: Very spacious, desk with chair, lots of lighting, TV was on the smaller size, they should definitely upgrade these to Roku Smart TVs at a bigger size, basic cable and WiFi.
Bathroom: Separate seating area with lots of light and mirrors to sit and do your makeup, etc. This could be closed from the bedroom area and the sink/tub/toilet area. The toilet area was a little tight. Lots of towels, however, their sizes were very small. The towels seemed like half a towel. Bath and Body Works Soaps and Shampoo. Very clean. Only downfall that cost the review a star was some of the door was breaking off, it definitely needed to be replaced and also the fact that when you showered, the water pooled in the bottom of the tub. They should really see why that happens. The water pressure was wonderful.
Their cleaning staff does an amazing job. If they updated and fixed a few things, they would be 5 Star every day.
The front desk was friendly and helpful.
The only problem was when leaving, our cart for luggage was never sent to us. I had to make 5 trips, and I had to walk right through where the front desk was, and no one said anything to me. At one point, I was carrying a half case of water, and it broke. No one even helped me to grab the water. When I handed in my keys, I told the young lady about how that cart never came. She was very sorry as she saw me red-faced and sweating from carrying everything. The gentleman who usually helps with that just asked what I had said to her, and she told him. He never apologized. He was the same person I had tipped generously when he helped with our luggage when we arrived. It seemed he was more interested in helping people arrive more than helping them leave. I truly am only making a big deal about this because you can't get your own cart. You have to ask them for the cart. I did that more than once. Then, I was seen struggling with my belongings, and no one...
Read moreWe booked 2 rooms for 2 nights at the State Plaza Hotel. Pros: *Check in was quick and easy. *The rooms were large and they were very clean. There are kitchens in their suites if you think it would be worth the extra money for one. We did not have a suite. *The staff is friendly. From the desk clerks to housekeeping, they always greeted you with a smile. *Small, but very clean and nice gym with updated equipment (my daughter was grateful for this) *Walkable to the National Mall (My daughter and her boyfriend did this) *Food options within walking distance *Very reasonably priced
Cons : *Parking was a mess at this hotel. I called before booking and we were promised in/out on-site parking for $38 a night, but had a headache with this at every return to the hotel. They have less than 2 dozen on-site parking spots (between 2 garages) for a hotel with 241 rooms. My fiancé has a handicap (he can't walk too far, and, we did have his handicap hang tag) but they have no handicap parking spots. But note they do reserve 4 spots for electric cars they wouldn't let me park in :/ They will have you park around the corner and down the block where they have a few spots they can use at another property's garage. Several times I had to walk this alone, and once in the dark after 10pm. *They need air conditioning in the bathroom! I don't know who would design a bathroom without air in it, no fan... nothing circulating. It was over 90 degrees at times while we were there. That bathroom was sweltering! *No security. The outside doors are automatic and state “This door is locked from 5:00 pm to 7:00 am. Your room key will permit access” These doors were never locked at any time. You walk up to them and they open so you have free access to both the hotel, and the garage. *There were 2 elevators but one was out of order the whole time we were there. **This did not apply to us, but for anyone who is wheelchair dependent, it doesn't appear that this is a handicapped friendly hotel. Both main entrances have stairs to the elevators, no ramps. And although the ground (garage level) floor is accessible from outside, you would have to go around the building down a long alleyway and navigate the incline of the driveway to get to that level in order to access the ground level doors and the elevators inside. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to a wheelchair dependent person.
Minor cons: Although the rooms are large, there is only one comfortable chair to sit in. There is also a desk with a desk chair (not comfortable). Considering the size of the room (King room) there should be another chair, or even a loveseat, so 2 people can sit and relax after a long day out. The TV is a flat screen, but a little small and old. It was difficult to turn on, we needed to call someone up to help us. And, we found out later, so did my daughter and her boyfriend. So it must have been something unusual with their TV. It never did get a "great picture". It was a bit grainy. We weren't there to watch TV, but it annoyed my fiancé who likes to watch the evening news. No ice machine, but if you called the front desk they'll bring up a bag for you. Luckily another guest told me this because I wasn't informed on check in. My daughter was told to go next door to CVS :/
Conclusion: We would never return to this hotel because of the parking frustrations we had to endure while there. From parking on-site when we first got there, then not because of the lack of spots when we returned from touring that same day, to being promised a 'reserved' spot from a manager "Kim", only to be given away to another car while we were out later that night. We never knew what would happen when we returned. What an unorganized mess. I do NOT...
Read moreWe stayed at the State Plaza Hotel to see the cherry blossoms. It’s about a 20-25 minute walk to the Tidal Basin from the hotel. Very reasonable rates for two days. The deluxe king room was more spacious than I expected, with a decent sized bedroom, a lounge room with a couch, and a kitchenette large enough for a table for 2 to eat at with nearly a full size fridge. The bed in the bedroom is huge and soft. There are two separate air conditioner/heating units with their own wall controls, one in the lounge and one in the bedroom. The kitchenette is adequate, with gas burners, but is rather dim, so I wouldn’t want to do a lot of cooking there. It was enough for me to whip us up breakfasts with the supplied cookware, which consisted of a pan, pot (both with lids), spatula, sharp knife, bowls, glasses, wine glasses, cork screw, silverware and plates. I left the dishes in the sink to clean later, and housekeeping cleaned them for me, which was a rather nice surprise. Housekeeping will clean your room daily without you having to request it.
The hotel is actually two buildings, both with their own lobby, and they look very similar. We accidentally walked into the wrong building one day and had to go back outside after not being able to find our way to the other building. They’re a little dated in appearance but certainly not run down by any means.
There is space out front for 3 cars to stop and unload or load at the main hotel building. There are staff that will help people with their luggage. Both hotel buildings have a small staircase of about 6 steps leading up from the lobby to the first floor rooms and the elevator. I didn’t need help lifting our luggage up it, but I saw people leaving their luggage in the lobby and the staff loading it onto carts up the stairs and taking it to their rooms.
Parking at the hotel is very expensive and very limited. While this is normal for DC hotels, it’s not valet, which is odd. We arrived on a Sunday and parked down the street for free, then later in a nearby garage. Rates around the area for garages are $25-35 a day as of 2025. We wanted to be able to check out of the hotel and leave our car in a garage, and explore the area until dusk. Because the hotel has such limited parking, they need every space for new guests. Check out is at noon too, which is very nice. We didn’t feel rushed.
Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and polite. It rained suddenly one evening, and the staff put a large basket of umbrellas out for guests to use.
The CVS next door is closing, but there’s a larger one a 10 minute walk away near GWU campus in western market. The area is a rather nice area to walk around and I never felt unsafe.
The bathroom is small but appealing. A couple will likely have to take turns getting ready in the morning.
We had an overall pleasant experience. I’ve stayed at other DC hotels in the vicinity for five hundred a night, and a nightly stay here was a third of the price. I’d definitely...
