Beautiful, peaceful memorial that is never over-crowded. This is also a lovely spot for small weddings and elopements and has been a particularly popular place in 2020 during the pandemic. Our wedding photography team (HannahBjorndal.com) loves photographing couples here and has found it to be the perfect combination of classic DC and originality - it doesn't feel touristy, overdone or too busy.
To have your wedding here, you need to file for a permit with the National Park Service. You will get a 2-hour time slot and the permit is very inexpensive, I believe it is currently between $140-250. It is hard to get to if you have many guests driving and parking themselves, so I'd recommend having transportation arranged for your group!
This is also a great option for JUST wedding day portraits. If you are interested in a very classic DC backdrop but your wedding venue doesn't have photo locations that you love, this is a very easy spot to visit with your wedding party, family or just the two of you. Again, definitely recommend hiring a transportation service to take you to and from! You will need to file for a photo permit here as well, and it is $140. They only issue one permit at a time at this location, so file for it as early as you can!
This spot is so picturesque and there are a lot of options nearby for other photo locations - if you are looking for the perfect spot in DC to...

However, both of my visits coincided with wedding ceremonies taking place at the memorial. While I understand that some locations permit such celebrations, it felt incongruous at a site dedicated to fallen soldiers. More clarity with signage regarding the memorial's solemn purpose might benefit all visitors.
For those looking for a quiet moment of reflection, please visit earlier in the day or on weekdays. Despite the unexpected events, the memorial's beauty and significance remain...
Read moreSpent some time in D.C. recently and enjoyed seeing many of the memorials and monuments along The Mall, including the District of Columbia War Memorial located south of the Reflection Pool and east of the Korean War Memorial.
This memorial is a small circular shaped temple, supported by doric columns and a small dome and commemorates the 500 citizens of D.C. who lost their lives during WWII. It is a small yet attractive monument to see at this time of year when the trees are full of green leaves.
You can conveniently include a stop at the District of Columbia War Memorial in between visits to the Martin Luther King Jr., WWII and Korean War Memorials if interested in visiting these attractions along The...
