The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art is a very special place. Open just shy of one year, Executive Director David Hummer has already brought to our area 4 exhibits that have given us a first-hand look at the work of arguably the best artists working right now in the United States and Internationally. The first exhibit was a juried competition; 48 works of all mediums were chosen from 750 entries by NYC artist Alyssa Monks. The second and third exhibits were one-man shows, the first by North Carolina artist David Shevlino and the second by Samantha French, who grew up in Minnesota but now lives in New York City. The current exhibit that opened July 10 is called "Painting the Figure NOW," and the paintings chosen by Curator Didi Menendez (an artist and poet from Illinois) will absolutely blow you away with their virtuosity! My favorite is called "Barbie Cake," a tour de force of fantasy come to life by Brooklyn painter Margaret Bowland. Hummer explained that he is everything from director to resident artist to janitor there, and his wife is the administrator. Seeing these works and hearing Hummer share his vision for this new museum was a treat. I recommend the Polance exhibit to all...
